# 7zFM.exe

Application Process: Igor Pavlov

Also called 7zfm, 7-zip, 7z file manager

Igor Pavlov, Application

7-Zip File Manager. 7z.exe is the command-line tool. 7zFM.exe is the window you browse archives in.

## What you need to know

This is the 7-Zip window. 7z.exe on the command line is a sibling tool, not a second product URL.

7zFM.exe is 7-Zip File Manager. CPU during a 7z ultra compress is the algorithm, not Defender by default. MsMpEng may still scan the output when the file lands.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from 7-Zip

**High CPU?**: You are compressing or testing an archive

**Same as 7z.exe?**: No. That is the CLI

Feex says

If 7zFM is busy and you started a solid 7z, I would let it finish. Ending it leaves a truncated archive. That is not how you save the disk.

## What is 7zFM.exe?

7zFM.exe is the 7-Zip File Manager GUI. 7z.exe is the console compressor. 7zG.exe is a GUI helper for progress dialogs. One product, three tools.

## What does it do?

It lists archives, extracts, and starts compress jobs. Explorer context-menu extracts often call 7zG.exe, so you may not see 7zFM at all.

## Why is it running?

You opened 7-Zip or a file association launched the manager. A 7zFM.exe from a "7zip pro" ad site is not Igor Pavlov's build.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

A 7-Zip.org build under Program Files\7-Zip is the real manager. The publisher shows as Igor Pavlov. Other publishers need a second look.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe`

- Sibling tools: 7z.exe, 7zG.exe
- Official site is 7-zip.org
- Context menu may use 7zG instead

## Can I end it?

Aborts the archive job

Ending 7zFM.exe during compress leaves a bad archive. Let the dialog finish or cancel from 7-Zip.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall 7-Zip

Use Settings > Apps. Do not delete only 7zFM.exe if you still want the context menu tools.

## Should it start with Windows?

7-Zip should not start with Windows. A Startup 7zFM is unexpected.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: High during LZMA2 ultra, by design

  **Memory**: Dictionary size settings

  **Disk**: Read source, write archive

**Network**: None unless the path is remote

## File information

| Executable name | 7zFM.exe |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Common legitimate path | C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe |
| Publisher | Igor Pavlov |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Igor Pavlov |

## Common problems

### Defender scans the new archive

MsMpEng can spike after 7-Zip writes a large file. That is the scanner, not 7zFM leaking.

### People download 7-Zip from ad networks

The official domain is 7-zip.org. Other domains add junk.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Watch whether 7zG.exe is the busy helper

A context-menu extract may not show 7zFM at all.

### Lower dictionary size if the PC pages

That is a 7-Zip setting, not a Windows service.
