# AccountsControlHost.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called accountscontrolhost, accounts control host

Windows, System Component

Accounts Control Host. Settings and packaged apps use it when you add or manage a Microsoft or local account in a system dialog.

## What you need to know

This hosts the add-account UI. SystemSettings.exe is the Settings app around it.

AccountsControlHost.exe is the Accounts Control packaged host. You see it while adding a Microsoft account or a workplace account. It is not Credential Guard.

- **Safe?**: Yes, as a Windows package

**Is it Settings?**: Settings can open it

**Should I end it?**: An add-account wizard will close

Feex says

If I am adding an account and this host is the busy name, that is the wizard. I would not end LsaIso because of it.

## What is AccountsControlHost.exe?

AccountsControlHost.exe is the Windows Accounts Control experience. It lives under SystemApps, not System32.

## What does it do?

It collects account details and hands them to the account infrastructure. CredentialUIBroker.exe may still show a WAM prompt on top.

## Why is it running?

You opened Accounts in Settings, or an app started Add account. The host should exit when the wizard closes.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The Microsoft AccountsControl package is expected. An AccountsControlHost.exe in Temp is not Settings.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.AccountsControl_*\AccountsControlHost.exe`

- SystemApps package
- Opened from Settings Accounts
- Not Isolated LSA

## Can I end it?

Closes the wizard

Ending AccountsControlHost.exe aborts the add-account sheet. Accounts already on the PC stay. SystemSettings.exe can still open.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete the AccountsControl package. Repair or reset Settings if the add-account page will not open.

## Should it start with Windows?

On demand from Settings or an app. Not a tray.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low

**Memory**: Moderate for a packaged host

  **Network**: Account sign-in

  **Disk**: Low

### Wizard stuck on a spinner

End this host, then retry from Settings. Check the network before you reset Windows.

### Confused with CredentialUIBroker

Broker is the token prompt. This host is the accounts page chrome.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Settings > Accounts

Reopen add account from there.

### Do not download a replacement host

Re-register the SystemApps package only after a broken Settings, as a repair.
