# amdfendrsr.exe

Application Process: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Also called amdfendrsr, amd crash defender, amdfendr

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Application

AMD Crash Defender user service. It is the user-mode side of AMD's crash-defender filter. It is not atiesrxx.exe (AMD External Events).

## What you need to know

AMD Crash Defender user service, not atiesrxx (AMD external events).

amdfendrsr.exe is the AMD Crash Defender user service that talks to the amdfendr filter. atiesrxx.exe is AMD External Events Utility. Ending Crash Defender does not stop hotplug events in atiesrxx.

- **Safe?**: Yes, with AMD graphics

**Same as atiesrxx?**: No. That is External Events

**Should I end it?**: Crash Defender extras pause

Feex says

If amdfendrsr is here on an AMD GPU PC, I treat it as Crash Defender. I do not disable atiesrxx to "remove Crash Defender."

## What is amdfendrsr.exe?

amdfendrsr.exe is the AMD Crash Defender user service, not atiesrxx.exe. The filter driver is amdfendr. This process is the user service next to it.

## What does it do?

It supports AMD Crash Defender so a GPU hang can be contained. It does not handle AMD External Events. That is atiesrxx.exe.

## Why is it running?

An AMD Adrenalin or OEM AMD graphics package is installed. An Intel-only iGPU PC should not show this as a Microsoft file.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe when AMD signed

An AMD-signed amdfendrsr under the amdfendr DriverStore package is Crash Defender. amdfendrsr.exe in Temp is not. This is still not atiesrxx.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\amdfendr.inf_amd64_*\amdfendrsr.exe`

- Tied to AMD Crash Defender / amdfendr
- Publisher should be Advanced Micro Devices
- External Events is atiesrxx.exe

## Can I end it?

Crash Defender user service stops

Ending amdfendrsr.exe stops that user service until AMD starts it again. atiesrxx.exe can keep running. A game hang may then have fewer defender hooks.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall AMD software, not a random delete

Use AMD cleanup or the Adrenalin uninstaller. Do not delete atiesrxx.exe to remove Crash Defender.

## Should it start with Windows?

The AMD Crash Defender user service starts it. It is not a Startup Apps game shortcut.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Should be idle. A spike after a driver crash is the interesting case

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Low

**GPU**: Defender path, not 3D render

## Common problems

### People disable atiesrxx thinking it is Crash Defender

External Events is display hotplug and related AMD events. Crash Defender is this filename.

### Filename scanners flag amdfendr as malware

Path and AMD signature decide it. A copy outside DriverStore is the case to inspect.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Reinstall Adrenalin from AMD or the PC vendor

That restores Crash Defender and the filter. Do not copy amdfendrsr.exe into System32 by hand.

### Confirm you are not looking at atiesrxx

Open file location. amdfendr.inf DriverStore is this article. atiesrxx.exe is AMD External Events.
