Application Process: Brave Software, Inc.

Also called brave, brave browser

Brave Software, Inc., Application

Brave's browser process. It is Chromium-based, so extra brave.exe rows are tabs and utilities, similar to Chrome but not chrome.exe.

## What you need to know

This is Brave, a Chromium browser. The exe is brave.exe, not chrome.exe.

brave.exe is Brave. Shields and the rewards/BAT helper are Brave-specific. Process isolation still looks like Chrome, but the publisher and path are Brave Software.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from Brave Software

  **Many processes?**: Yes. Chromium model

**Is it Chrome?**: Same family, different product and exe

Feex says

If someone says Brave is Chrome because Task Manager shows a pile of processes, I would point at the exe name. brave.exe is the tell. chrome.exe is Google.

## What is brave.exe?

brave.exe is the Brave browser. It is Chromium with Brave Shields. Google Chrome remains chrome.exe. Edge remains msedge.exe.

## What does it do?

It isolates tabs and GPU work into extra brave.exe processes. A Brave Rewards or crash helper can appear as another Brave-named file.

## Why is it running?

You opened Brave or a protocol handler launched it. A brave.exe from a "faster Chrome" bundle is not Brave Software.

## Why are there multiple copies?

Chromium process-per-site. Brave Task Manager (Shift+Esc in the browser) names the tab.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

A signed Brave Software build under AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser is the browser. Other publishers using brave.exe are the exception to inspect.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe`

- Publisher: Brave Software, Inc.
- Not chrome.exe
- Shields are a Brave feature, not a Windows service

## Can I end it?

Closes those tabs

Ending a helper crashes that tab. Ending the browser process closes Brave. Background apps can keep a process if you allowed it in Brave settings.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall Brave

Use Settings > Apps. Deleting brave.exe leaves the profile under Brave-Browser\User Data.

## Should it start with Windows?

Brave can run background apps after the window closes. That is a Brave setting, same family of idea as Chrome, different product.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Follows the tab and Shields work

  **Memory**: Chromium tab cost

  **Disk**: Profile

  **Network**: Pages, sync, optional Rewards

## Common problems

### People apply Chrome flags blindly

Some flags exist. Brave-specific Shields settings are the first stop, not chrome:// that belongs to Google.

### Rewards process questions

That helper is Brave, not a Windows host. Disable Rewards in Brave if you do not want it.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Open Brave Task Manager

It lists tabs the way Chrome does, for this exe.

### Confirm BraveSoftware in the path

Any other folder needs a publisher check.
