claude.exe is the Anthropic Claude desktop app. ChatGPT.exe is the OpenAI ChatGPT Windows app. Ending ChatGPT does not close Claude. Extra claude.exe rows are Electron helpers, not a second vendor.

## What is claude.exe?

claude.exe is Claude desktop, not ChatGPT.exe. Anthropic ships this Electron app. OpenAI ships ChatGPT.exe.

## What does it do?

It hosts the Claude desktop window and helpers. It does not host OpenAI ChatGPT. A browser tab on claude.ai is still the browser.

## Why is it running?

You opened Claude desktop, or it stayed in the tray. A claude.exe from an unofficial zip is not the Anthropic build.

## Why are there multiple copies?

Electron can start GPU and renderer copies named claude.exe. That is still Claude. It is not ChatGPT.exe.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe when Anthropic signed

An Anthropic-signed claude.exe under AnthropicClaude or Programs\Claude is the app. claude.exe in Downloads can be a rename. This is still not ChatGPT.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\AnthropicClaude\claude.exe`

- Publisher should be Anthropic
- Not ChatGPT.exe

## Can I end it?

Closes Claude desktop

Ending claude.exe closes that app. ChatGPT.exe can stay. Unsaved chat drafts live in Claude, not in ChatGPT.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall Claude

Uninstall Claude from Settings > Apps. Uninstalling ChatGPT.exe does not remove claude.exe. Do not delete the AppData folder by hand if you still want chat history.

## Should it start with Windows?

Claude desktop can start with Windows from its own setting. That is not the ChatGPT startup toggle.

- **CPU**: Follows the conversation UI and any local helper

  **Memory**: Electron baseline plus chat history in the window

  **Disk**: App cache under AppData

  **Network**: Anthropic endpoints while you chat

### People close ChatGPT to stop Claude

Two vendors. Open file location. AnthropicClaude is this article. ChatGPT is OpenAI.

### Blank window after a WebView or GPU glitch

Quit Claude from the tray and reopen. Repairing ChatGPT will not reset this profile.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Quit from the Claude tray, then reopen

That recycles Electron helpers. Ending ChatGPT.exe is the wrong product.

### Confirm publisher and path

Anthropic under AppData is this app. A claude.exe next to a game crack is not Claude desktop.
