# control.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called control, control panel, classic control panel

Windows, System Component

Classic Control Panel. It opens .cpl applets and the old Control Panel shell. Immersive Settings is SystemSettings.exe.

## What you need to know

control.exe is Control Panel, not Settings.

control.exe is the classic Control Panel host. SystemSettings.exe is Immersive Settings. Ending control.exe closes the old window. It does not uninstall Settings.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32

**Same as Settings?**: No. Settings is SystemSettings.exe

**Should I end it?**: Control Panel closes

Feex says

If someone says Settings is open and I only see control.exe, I treat that as Control Panel. Win+I is SystemSettings. Two apps, two names.

## What is control.exe?

control.exe is Control Panel, not Settings. It lives in System32 and still opens applets that never moved to SystemSettings.exe.

## What does it do?

It launches Control Panel categories and .cpl files such as sysdm.cpl. It does not host the Settings pages you open with Win+I.

## Why is it running?

You ran control, a shortcut still points at Control Panel, or an older tool opened a .cpl. A copy at logon is a shortcut you added, not a service.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 control.exe is Control Panel. A control.exe in Downloads is not that host.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\control.exe`

- Classic Control Panel
- Settings is SystemSettings.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation

## Can I end it?

Closes Control Panel

Ending control.exe closes the Control Panel window. Settings can stay open. Your last applet change may already be saved.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete control.exe. Many repair and hardware applets still start here even when Settings exists.

## Should it start with Windows?

On demand unless a Startup shortcut runs control. It is not a tray service.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low except a stuck applet

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Low

**Network**: None for a local applet

## Common problems

### People hunt only for Settings

Some items still live in Control Panel. Both apps can exist on the same PC.

### Blank Control Panel after a "debloat"

Repair system files. Do not replace control.exe from a zip.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Win+I versus control

Win+I opens SystemSettings.exe. Start > Control Panel or control.exe is this process.

### Open file location

System32 is the only expected folder for the real host.
