# dxdiag.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called dxdiag, directx diagnostic, directx diagnostic tool

Windows, System Component

DirectX Diagnostic Tool. It reports graphics, sound, and DirectX info. It is not Task Manager.

## What you need to know

dxdiag is the DirectX diagnostic, not Task Manager.

dxdiag.exe walks DirectX, display, and sound devices and can save a text report. taskmgr.exe is the live process and performance view. Ending dxdiag does not close Task Manager and does not change GPU usage of other apps.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32

**Same as Task Manager?**: No. This is a DirectX report

**Can I end it?**: The diagnostic window closes

Feex says

If I need a DirectX dump, I run dxdiag. I do not use Task Manager's GPU column as that report, and I do not end taskmgr to close this wizard.

## What is dxdiag.exe?

dxdiag is the DirectX diagnostic, not Task Manager. It is a report tool. taskmgr.exe shows live processes and a GPU graph. Swapping those names is wrong.

## What does it do?

It queries DirectX, display adapters, and audio, then shows or saves the report. It does not end other tasks and it does not replace msconfig.

## Why is it running?

You ran dxdiag from Run, a support script, or a game helper. A copy that sits open is the wizard still on screen.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 dxdiag.exe is Microsoft. A dxdiag.exe in a "driver pack" zip is not. This is still not taskmgr.exe.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\dxdiag.exe`

- DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Live processes: taskmgr.exe
- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation

## Can I end it?

Closes the diagnostic

Ending dxdiag.exe closes the tool. Task Manager stays. The GPU keeps doing whatever games and apps were already doing.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete dxdiag.exe. Update the GPU driver from the vendor if that was the goal. Do not delete System32\taskmgr.exe.

## Should it start with Windows?

You launch it. It should not sit in Startup Apps. A game overlay is not this tool.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Short spike while it enumerates devices

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Can write DxDiag.txt

**GPU**: Query only, not a game loop

## File information

| Executable name | dxdiag.exe |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Common legitimate path | C:\Windows\System32\dxdiag.exe |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Microsoft Windows |

## Common problems

### People watch Task Manager GPU while this window is open and call it a leak

Enumeration is brief. A game or browser is the usual GPU user. This exe is the report, not the renderer.

### A forum "dxdiag replacement" in Downloads

The real tool is System32. Do not run a namesake zip. Task Manager is still a different exe.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Save the report from the tool, then update the GPU driver

The text file is the artifact. Task Manager will not export that DirectX page.

### If dxdiag will not start, check System32 signature, not taskmgr

Repair the OS or the display driver. Replacing Task Manager does not restore DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
