# GameInputSvc.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called gameinputsvc, gameinput service, microsoft gameinput

Windows, System Component

Microsoft GameInput service process. It is the in-box game pad and input stack. It is not GameBarPresenceWriter.exe.

## What you need to know

GameInput service, not Xbox Game Bar presence.

GameInputSvc.exe is the in-box Microsoft GameInput service. Games use it for controllers and other input devices. GameBarPresenceWriter.exe only publishes that you are in a game for Xbox Game Bar. Ending GameInput does not close the title and does not hide Game Bar.

- **Safe?**: Yes. It is GameInput

**Is it Game Bar?**: No. Presence is a different exe

**Should I end it?**: Controllers can drop

Feex says

If a controller dies and GameInputSvc is gone, I start this service again. I do not turn off Game Bar first, because presence writer is a different process.

## What is GameInputSvc.exe?

GameInputSvc.exe is the GameInput service, not Xbox Game Bar presence. GameBarPresenceWriter.exe is the presence writer. This process is the in-box input stack for game pads and related devices.

## What does it do?

It mediates GameInput clients, filtering, and device access. It does not draw Win+G overlays and it does not write "you are in a game" for Game Bar.

## Why is it running?

A game or an app created an IGameInput instance, or the in-box service is running for controllers. A PC with Game Bar off can still show GameInputSvc. That split is the tell.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 GameInputSvc.exe is the in-box service. A GameInput exe from a cheat zip is not. Game Bar presence is still a different filename.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\GameInputSvc.exe`

- In-box GameInput service
- Presence writer: GameBarPresenceWriter.exe
- Redistributable sibling: GameInputRedistService.exe

## Can I end it?

Input devices can drop

Ending GameInputSvc.exe can disconnect GameInput clients until the service starts again. Game Bar can still open. Presence writer is not this process.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete GameInputSvc.exe. Turn Game Bar off in Settings if you want overlays gone. That toggle does not uninstall GameInput.

## Should it start with Windows?

The GameInput service can start with the device or a game. It is not the Game Bar Startup row.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low except while devices reconnect

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Low

**Network**: None required for a local pad

## Common problems

### Controller works, overlay still annoys

That is Game Bar / presence, not this service. Settings > Gaming > Game Bar.

### Two GameInput names

In-box is GameInputSvc.exe. A game install can add GameInputRedistService.exe. Do not disable both as one switch.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Unplug the pad, then start the GameInput service

services.msc or the Xbox accessory troubleshooter. Win+G off is not a GameInput repair.

### Confirm you are not looking at GameBarPresenceWriter

Open file location. Presence writer is a Game Bar helper. This image is the GameInput service.
