# GamingServices.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called gamingservices, xbox gaming services, gaming services

Windows, System Component

Xbox Gaming Services host. It supports Xbox and Microsoft Store game runtime work. GamingServicesNet.exe is the network companion. It is not GameBarPresenceWriter.exe.

## What you need to know

GamingServices is Xbox Gaming Services, not GameBarPresenceWriter.

GamingServices.exe is the Xbox Gaming Services package host. GamingServicesNet.exe is the network companion in the same family. GameBarPresenceWriter.exe only publishes that you are in a game so Game Bar can attach. Ending presence does not stop Gaming Services. Ending Gaming Services does not close the game exe.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from Xbox Gaming Services

**Is it Game Bar presence?**: No. That is GameBarPresenceWriter

**Same as GamingServicesNet?**: No. Net is the network companion

Feex says

If a Store game will not start, I repair Gaming Services. I do not end GameBarPresenceWriter and call the runtime fixed.

## What is GamingServices.exe?

GamingServices.exe is Xbox Gaming Services, not GameBarPresenceWriter.exe. The package is Microsoft.GamingServices. Presence writer is a System32 Game Bar helper. GamingServicesNet.exe is the network companion, not this image.

## What does it do?

It hosts Gaming Services so Xbox and Store titles can start and use Xbox runtime pieces. It does not write Game Bar presence. It does not render the title.

## Why is it running?

Windows installed Gaming Services, or a Store / Xbox game needed the runtime. A leftover after you quit a title can be the service host staying resident.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The Microsoft.GamingServices package host is Microsoft. A GamingServices.exe in a trainer zip is not. This is still not GameBarPresenceWriter.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.GamingServices_*\GamingServices.exe`

- Package: Microsoft.GamingServices
- Network companion: GamingServicesNet.exe
- Presence writer is System32\GameBarPresenceWriter.exe

## Can I end it?

Store / Xbox titles can fail to start

Ending GamingServices.exe can break the next Store game launch. Game Bar presence is a different process. The game exe can keep running until it misses the runtime.

## Can I remove it?

Reset Gaming Services, do not delete WindowsApps

Repair or reset Gaming Services from Apps, or reinstall the Store package. Do not delete GameBarPresenceWriter.exe to remove Gaming Services. Do not take ownership of WindowsApps.

## Should it start with Windows?

Gaming Services starts with the package / service. Game Bar presence starts when Game Bar thinks you are in a title.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: A spike at game launch or runtime init

**Memory**: Moderate for the runtime host

  **Disk**: Package and license work

**Network**: Often GamingServicesNet.exe, not this image alone

## Common problems

### People disable Game Bar to fix a Store game that will not launch

Presence writer is Game Bar. This host is Gaming Services. Repair Microsoft.GamingServices.

### Confused with GamingServicesNet

Net is the network companion. This exe is the main Gaming Services host. Open file location on both.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Settings > Apps > Gaming Services > Advanced options > Repair

Then launch the Store title again. Win+G Game Bar settings will not restore this runtime.

### Confirm you are not looking at GameBarPresenceWriter

WindowsApps\Microsoft.GamingServices is this article. System32\GameBarPresenceWriter.exe is presence only.
