# HelpPane.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called helppane, windows help, help pane

Windows, System Component

Windows Help and Support pane. F1 in some desktop apps still opens this host. It is not the Settings app and not a browser.

## What you need to know

This is the F1 Help pane, not SystemSettings.exe and not msedge.exe.

HelpPane.exe is Windows Help. Older Win32 apps still call it. Ending it closes Help. It does not change Settings.

- **Safe?**: Yes. Help opened

**Is it Edge?**: No. Help may still hand off to the web

**Should I end it?**: Help closes

Feex says

If F1 opened a blank Help pane, I would end HelpPane and use the web article. I would not end mmc.exe unless I had a snap-in open.

## What is HelpPane.exe?

HelpPane.exe is the Windows Help pane executable, usually under C:\Windows.

## What does it do?

It shows in-box help topics and can open a browser for online content. It is not the app that requested help.

## Why is it running?

You pressed F1 or an app invoked Help. A leftover after you closed every window is a stuck pane.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

C:\Windows\HelpPane.exe signed by Microsoft is the F1 host. A HelpPane.exe in an attachment or a theme zip is not Windows Help.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\HelpPane.exe`

- F1 host
- Not Settings
- May open a browser for online help

## Can I end it?

Closes Help

Ending HelpPane.exe closes the Help pane only. The app that sent F1 stays running. A browser it already opened is a different process.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete HelpPane.exe. Older Win32 apps still call this host for F1. Use the web article if the pane is blank.

## Should it start with Windows?

F1 starts it. Not Startup Apps.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low

  **Memory**: Small

  **Network**: Online help

  **Disk**: Help content

## Common problems

### Blank Help

End the pane and use support.microsoft.com. In-box CHM-era content is thin on current Windows.

### People think F1 is a virus

The host is HelpPane. The site it opens is a different process.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Close Help and search the web article

Faster than repairing HelpPane.

### Do not replace HelpPane from a zip

In-box binary.
