# msconfig.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called msconfig, system configuration, system configuration utility

Windows, System Component

System Configuration. It is the msconfig dialog for boot, services checkboxes, and tools. It is not Task Manager and not msinfo32.

## What you need to know

msconfig is System Configuration, not Task Manager and not msinfo32.

msconfig.exe is System Configuration. Startup Apps on current Windows live in Task Manager or Settings. msinfo32.exe is System Information (hardware and VBS summary). Ending msconfig only closes the dialog. It does not end taskmgr.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32

**Same as Task Manager?**: No. Task Manager is taskmgr.exe

**Same as msinfo32?**: No. That is System Information

Feex says

If someone opened msconfig to disable Startup, I send them to Task Manager on current Windows. I do not open msinfo32 for those checkboxes.

## What is msconfig.exe?

msconfig is System Configuration, not Task Manager and not msinfo32. The dialog can hide services and change boot options. taskmgr.exe is the live process list and Startup apps. msinfo32 is an inventory window.

## What does it do?

It writes System Configuration choices (selective startup, Safe Boot, service checkboxes). It does not list CPU graphs like Task Manager and it does not replace System Information.

## Why is it running?

You ran msconfig from Run or a tool shortcut. A leftover copy means the dialog is still open.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 msconfig.exe is Microsoft. An msconfig.exe in Downloads is not. This is still not taskmgr.exe and not msinfo32.exe.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\msconfig.exe`

- System Configuration dialog
- Startup apps on current Windows: Task Manager
- System Information is msinfo32.exe, not this file

## Can I end it?

Closes System Configuration

Ending msconfig.exe closes the dialog. Task Manager stays. Unapplied boot checkboxes are not a running taskmgr.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete msconfig.exe. Use Task Manager for Startup apps if that was the goal. Do not delete System32\taskmgr.exe to "replace msconfig."

## Should it start with Windows?

You launch it. It is not itself a Startup app. Safe Boot is a boot checkbox inside this dialog.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Idle while the dialog sits there

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Low

  **Network**: None

## File information

| Executable name | msconfig.exe |
| ---------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| Common legitimate path | C:\Windows\System32\msconfig.exe |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Microsoft Windows |

## Common problems

### Selective startup left them in a half-disabled boot

Open msconfig again and choose Normal startup. Task Manager cannot flip that boot mode. msinfo32 will only report the state.

### They hunt Startup in msinfo32

System Information is inventory. Current Startup apps are Task Manager > Startup apps, not this dialog's old tab on modern Windows.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### For Startup apps, open taskmgr.exe > Startup apps

msconfig's Startup tab points you there on current Windows. That is the sibling they actually wanted.

### For hardware and VBS, open msinfo32, not this dialog

System Configuration will not show Virtualization-based security the way System Information does.
