# NVDisplay.Container.exe

Application Process: NVIDIA Corporation

Also called nvdisplay.container, nvidia display container, nvdisplay.containerlocalsystem

NVIDIA Corporation, Application

NVIDIA Display Container. It hosts display-driver plugins for the NVIDIA Display Container LS service. It is not every nvcontainer.exe, and it is not the GeForce Experience overlay by itself.

## What you need to know

This is NVIDIA's display container, not nvcontainer's other family blindly; it is not GeForce Experience overlay by itself.

NVDisplay.Container.exe is the display-container host, usually NVIDIA Display Container LS. nvcontainer.exe is a different NVIDIA container runtime for other driver plugins. The GeForce overlay is not this filename alone. Ending the display container can hide the NVIDIA tray icon and Control Panel helpers.

- **Safe?**: Yes, with an NVIDIA driver

**Is it the overlay?**: No. Not GeForce Experience by itself

**Same as nvcontainer?**: Related family, different container

Feex says

If NVDisplay.Container is pegged after a driver install, I look at NVIDIA Display Container LS and the display plugins. I do not treat every nvcontainer row as the same process, and I do not blame the overlay first.

## What is NVDisplay.Container.exe?

NVDisplay.Container.exe is NVIDIA's display container. It is not every nvcontainer.exe. It is not the GeForce Experience overlay by itself. The LS service hosts display plugins.

## What does it do?

It loads display-side NVIDIA plugins (Control Panel helpers, tray, some session plugins). nvcontainer.exe hosts other NVIDIA plugin groups. A game still has its own exe.

## Why is it running?

An NVIDIA GPU driver is installed. The display container starts with the driver service. A PC with only an AMD GPU should not show a Microsoft copy of this name.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe when NVIDIA signed

An NVIDIA-signed host under Display.NvContainer is the display container. NVDisplay.Container.exe in Temp is not. This is still not the overlay exe by itself.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Display.NvContainer\NVDisplay.Container.exe`

- Service: NVIDIA Display Container LS
- Also seen under DriverStore FileRepository display packages
- Sibling runtime: nvcontainer.exe, different folder

## Can I end it?

NVIDIA tray and display plugins can drop

Ending NVDisplay.Container.exe can take down Display Container LS plugins. The game exe can keep running. Restart the NVIDIA Display Container LS service if the tray vanishes.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall or clean-install the NVIDIA driver

Do not delete the container exe. Use NVIDIA's installer or a clean driver package. Uninstalling GeForce Experience does not always remove this display container.

## Should it start with Windows?

NVIDIA Display Container LS starts it. It is not a Startup Apps checkbox next to a game.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: A stuck display plugin can pin a core

**Memory**: Usually moderate. A leak is a driver bug

**Disk**: Low unless a plugin is logging

**GPU**: Display features, not the 3D game process

## Common problems

### High CPU blamed on "all NVIDIA containers"

Open file location. Display.NvContainer is this article. NvContainer\nvcontainer.exe is the other runtime.

### People disable the container to kill the overlay

The overlay is not this filename by itself. Turn the overlay off in GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA app.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Restart NVIDIA Display Container LS in services.msc

That recycles this host. Ending a random nvcontainer.exe row is a different container.

### Clean-install the NVIDIA driver if a plugin is stuck

Download from NVIDIA. Do not copy NVDisplay.Container.exe from another PC. Check the overlay setting separately.
