Application Process: Opera Software

Also called opera, opera browser

Opera Software, Application

Opera browser from Opera Software. It is Chromium-based. Extra opera.exe rows are usually helper processes. It is not chrome.exe and not msedge.exe.

## What you need to know

opera.exe is Opera, not chrome.exe and not msedge.

opera.exe is the Opera browser. It uses a Chromium engine, so Task Manager can show several opera.exe rows. chrome.exe is Google Chrome. msedge.exe is Microsoft Edge. Ending chrome.exe does not close Opera.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from Opera Software

**Same as Chrome?**: No. opera.exe is Opera

  **Many processes?**: Yes. Chromium multiprocess

Feex says

If opera.exe is the RAM hog, I would open Opera's built-in task manager. I do not close chrome.exe to fix an Opera tab.

## What is opera.exe?

opera.exe is Opera, not chrome.exe and not msedge.exe. Opera Software ships a Chromium-based browser. The parent process owns the window. Extra copies are renderers and utilities.

## What does it do?

It loads pages in Opera. Workspaces and built-in messengers are Opera features. It does not host Google Chrome profiles and it does not replace Edge.

## Why is it running?

You opened Opera, or a link handed off to it. A copy from a "free Opera optimizer" zip is not the installed browser.

## Why are there multiple copies?

Chromium multiprocess is expected. One parent plus GPU, renderer, and utility processes. All of those names can still be opera.exe. They are not chrome.exe.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

A signed Opera Software build under AppData\Local\Programs\Opera is the browser. opera.exe next to a codec installer is a different file. This is still not Chrome.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\opera.exe`

- GX and other Opera products use a sibling folder
- Publisher should be Opera Software
- Not Chrome\Application\chrome.exe and not msedge.exe

## Can I end it?

Closes those Opera processes

Ending a renderer crashes that Opera tab. Ending the parent closes Opera. Chrome and Edge stay open.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall Opera

Use Settings > Apps or the Opera uninstaller. Deleting opera.exe leaves the profile. Uninstalling Chrome does not remove Opera.

## Should it start with Windows?

Opera can restore windows at logon from its own setting. That is not a Chrome startup flag.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Follows the heaviest tab or hardware acceleration

**Memory**: Grows with Chromium process split

**Disk**: Profile and cache under AppData

**Network**: Active while pages and sync run

## Common problems

### People assume every Chromium browser is chrome.exe

Open file location. Programs\Opera is this article. Google\Chrome is chrome.exe. Edge is msedge.exe.

### High RAM versus Edge

Same family of engine, different product. Opera Task Manager names Opera tabs. Chrome Task Manager will not list them.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Use Opera's built-in task manager

It names the expensive tab. Windows Task Manager only shows opera.exe. Do not end chrome.exe as a test for Opera.

### Try Opera without add-ons before a reinstall

A stuck extension is an Opera problem. Repairing Edge does not reset this profile.
