# PowerToys.exe

Application Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called powertoys, power toys runner

Windows, Application

PowerToys runner and settings host. It starts the utilities you enabled. It is not FancyZones and it is not PowerLauncher.

## What you need to know

This is the PowerToys runner, not FancyZones and not PowerLauncher.

PowerToys.exe is the runner that owns settings and starts modules. PowerToys.FancyZones.exe is the snap engine. PowerToys.PowerLauncher.exe is Run (Alt+Space). Ending the runner can take the modules with it.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from Microsoft PowerToys

**Is it FancyZones?**: No. This is the runner

**Is it Run?**: No. PowerLauncher is Run

Feex says

If PowerToys.exe is here, I open PowerToys Settings to turn modules off. I do not end FancyZones to quit the whole suite.

## What is PowerToys.exe?

PowerToys.exe is the PowerToys runner, not FancyZones and not PowerLauncher. Settings and module lifetime live here. Each utility can still be its own exe.

## What does it do?

It shows the PowerToys settings window and launches enabled modules. It does not snap windows. FancyZones does that. It is not the Alt+Space box. PowerLauncher does that.

## Why is it running?

You installed PowerToys and left it running. A runner with every module off can still sit so settings stay available.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

A Microsoft-signed PowerToys.exe under Program Files\PowerToys or the user install folder is the runner. PowerToys.exe in Temp is not. This is still not FancyZones.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\PowerToys\PowerToys.exe`

- Per-user install can live under AppData\Local\PowerToys
- Settings host / runner
- Not PowerToys.FancyZones.exe and not PowerToys.PowerLauncher.exe

## Can I end it?

Modules stop with the runner

Ending PowerToys.exe can take FancyZones, Run, and other modules down. Turn a module off in PowerToys Settings if you only wanted one utility gone.

## Can I remove it?

Uninstall PowerToys

Use Settings > Apps or the PowerToys uninstaller. Deleting PowerToys.exe leaves module binaries. Ending FancyZones does not uninstall the suite.

## Should it start with Windows?

PowerToys can start with Windows from its own setting. That starts the runner, not FancyZones by itself.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low when modules are idle

**Memory**: Small for the runner. Modules add their own rows

  **Disk**: Low

**Network**: Update checks from PowerToys settings

Install from Microsoft Learn or GitHub releases. A random PowerToys.exe on the desktop is not the suite.

## Troubleshooting

### Open PowerToys Settings from the tray

Disable the module you do not want. That is the runner. FancyZones.exe is only snapping.

### Repair or reinstall PowerToys if the runner will not start
