# SecurityHealthService.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called securityhealthservice, windows security health service, security health

Windows, System Component

Windows Security Health Service. It keeps the Windows Security app and tray in sync with the actual protection state.

## What you need to know

This updates the Windows Security shield. It does not scan files.

SecurityHealthService.exe is the health broker for the Windows Security UI. MsMpEng.exe does the scan. Ending the health service makes the tray stale. It does not uninstall Defender.

- **Safe?**: Yes. It is the Security UI broker

**Is it the scanner?**: No. MsMpEng scans

**Should I end it?**: The shield icon will lie or vanish

Feex says

If the shield is missing and this service is dead, I would start Windows Security again. I would not hunt for a SecurityHealthService crack.

## What is SecurityHealthService.exe?

SecurityHealthService.exe is Windows Security Health Service. It reports whether firewall, Defender, and SmartScreen are on so the tray icon can stay honest.

## What does it do?

It does not scan memory. It watches health state and can launch the Windows Security app. SecurityHealthSystray.exe is the icon process on many PCs.

## Why is it running?

Windows Security is installed. You see this because the session wants a live shield. A third-party antivirus should take the icon and this service should settle.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The Microsoft-signed health service under Program Files\Windows Defender or System32 is expected. A copy in Temp is not the shield broker.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\SecurityHealthService.exe`

- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- UI broker, not the antimalware engine
- Tray may be SecurityHealthSystray.exe

## Can I end it?

Icon goes stale

Ending the health service hides or freezes the shield. Protection may still be running in MsMpEng. Do not use this as an off switch.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete SecurityHealthService.exe. Use Windows Security to change protection, or install another antivirus that registers as the owner.

## Should it start with Windows?

Windows starts the health service with the session. Removing it from Startup is a common "debloat" that only hides status.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Low except when the Security app opens

  **Memory**: Small

  **Disk**: Low

**Network**: Can check for definition or account status

## File information

| Executable name | SecurityHealthService.exe |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Common legitimate path | C:\Windows\System32\SecurityHealthService.exe |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Microsoft Windows |

## Common problems

### Shield says action needed while Defender is fine

Restart this service, then the Security app. A stale health cache is more common than a missing engine.

### Debloat scripts disable it

You lose the honest tray. Turn the service back on if you still use Windows Security.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Open Windows Security, not Task Manager, to change protection

The health service is a reporter.

### If another AV owns the PC, ignore a sleeping health service

The other product should own the icon.
