# services.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called services, service control manager, scm

Windows, System Component

Service Control Manager. It starts, stops, and tracks Windows services.

## What you need to know

This is the manager of Windows services.

services.exe is Service Control Manager. It is not a leftover. Ending it can take the service stack down with it.

- **Safe?**: Yes, if it is in System32

  **Can I end it?**: No

  **Related to?**: svchost.exe and services.msc

Feex says

If you want to change one service, use services.msc or Settings. Do not end services.exe to stop Windows Update.

## What is services.exe?

services.exe is Service Control Manager. It is the Windows process that starts and tracks services.

## What does it do?

It reads service configuration, starts service processes such as svchost.exe, and accepts start or stop requests.

## Why is it running?

Windows needs a manager for services from the moment the system is up.

## Is it safe?

Critical and normally safe

The legitimate file is in System32. Do not delete it because a list called it suspicious.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\services.exe`

- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Expected path: System32

## Can I end it?

No

Ending Service Control Manager can stop many services at once. That is an outage, not a cleanup.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete services.exe. Windows will not manage services without it.

## Should it start with Windows?

It starts with Windows. Leave it there.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Normally low

  **Memory**: Modest

  **Disk**: Low

  **Network**: None by itself

## Related services

SCM starts services. The next useful click is the service you actually care about.

Windows Update Windows Service

## Common problems

### A service will not start

The problem is usually that service, not SCM. Check the service name, dependencies, and Event Viewer.

### Confused with svchost

services.exe is the manager. svchost.exe is a common host for the services themselves.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Confirm the path and signature

Open the process properties and check that services.exe runs from the expected folder and is signed by the expected publisher. This is the first check, not a Registry edit.

### See what the process is doing

Task Manager can show CPU, memory, disk, and GPU. High use during an obvious job is often normal. High use when the PC is idle needs a closer look at the related app or service.

### Avoid destructive first steps

Do not delete services.exe, disable critical services without knowing the effect, or edit the Registry as the first move.
