# spoolsv.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called spoolsv, print spooler process, spooler subsystem

Windows, System Component

Spooler SubSystem App. It is the process that hosts the Print Spooler service and holds print jobs until the printer takes them.

## What you need to know

This is the Print Spooler process. The service name is Spooler, not spoolsv.

spoolsv.exe hosts the Print Spooler. Stuck jobs and vendor drivers are the usual CPU story. Ending the process clears in-flight jobs. The service article covers disable and History.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32

**High CPU with no print?**: A stuck job or a bad driver

**Should I end it?**: You will drop the queue

Feex says

If nothing is printing and spoolsv is busy, I clear the queue folder before I disable the service forever. A ghost job is more common than a new Windows feature.

## What is spoolsv.exe?

spoolsv.exe is Spooler SubSystem App. It is the user-mode host for the Spooler service. Printers, including virtual PDF printers, submit jobs here.

## What does it do?

It writes spool files, talks to port monitors, and hands data to the driver. It is not the Windows Fax UI and it is not Word.

## Why is it running?

A job is queued, a printer is being discovered, or a driver is polling. A quiet PC with no printers can still start it because Windows keeps the service Automatic on many SKUs.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

System32 and Microsoft is the real spooler host. A spoolsv.exe in a "printer crack" folder is not.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe`

- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Service name: Spooler
- Queue files live under System32\spool\PRINTERS

## Can I end it?

Stops the queue

Ending spoolsv.exe drops active jobs. That can unstick a wedged printer. Restart the Print Spooler service after, or jobs will sit.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete spoolsv.exe. Disable the Print Spooler service only if you accept no local printing. See the service page.

## Should it start with Windows?

The Spooler service starts the process. Startup Apps is the wrong screen.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Rises on a corrupted job or a chatty USB printer

**Memory**: Grows with large spool files

  **Disk**: Spool directory writes

  **Network**: Shared and IPP printers

## Common problems

### CPU with an empty queue UI

Clear C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS after stopping the service, then start it again. Hidden SPL files are a common cause.

### Remote print bugs

Treat Print Spooler exposure on a workstation as a hardening topic. Do not "fix" it by downloading a replacement exe.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Stop Spooler, clear PRINTERS, start Spooler

That is the supported stuck-job pattern. Ending only the process without the service restart leaves it inconsistent.

### Remove the last vendor driver as a test

A bad Type 3 driver can spin the host. Microsoft IPP or a Type 4 driver is the comparison.
