# taskhostw.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called taskhostw, host process for windows tasks, task host

Windows, System Component

Host Process for Windows Tasks. It loads DLLs that Task Scheduler registered as tasks, so several copies can be normal.

## What you need to know

This hosts scheduled-task DLLs. It is not Service Host.

taskhostw.exe is Host Process for Windows Tasks. Task Scheduler loads task bodies into it. Multiple copies are normal. svchost.exe is the service host and uses a different split story.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32

**Many copies?**: Often. Each hosts different tasks

**Same as svchost?**: No. This one hosts scheduled task DLLs

Feex says

If the row says Host Process for Windows Tasks, I open Task Scheduler before I open Services.msc. This is a task host, not wuauserv hiding under svchost.

## What is taskhostw.exe?

taskhostw.exe is the Host Process for Windows Tasks. A scheduled task whose action is a COM or DLL body runs inside this host instead of a standalone exe.

## What does it do?

Each copy loads a different set of task DLLs. That is why you see more than one. It does not group SCM services the way svchost.exe does, and it has no 3.5 GB split threshold.

## Why is it running?

A Microsoft or vendor task woke up. Time triggers, idle triggers, and logon triggers all use this host. A copy that never exits can be a task that is still running.

## Why are there multiple copies?

Several taskhostw.exe rows are expected. Count the command line or the task name, not the filename.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The legitimate host is in System32. A taskhostw.exe in a user Downloads folder is not Host Process for Windows Tasks.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\taskhostw.exe`

- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Inspect the task, not only the filename
- Not the same process as svchost.exe

## Can I end it?

Only the stuck task copy

Ending one copy stops the tasks inside that host. Ending every copy will break idle maintenance and some Microsoft tasks until they start again.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete taskhostw.exe. Disable a specific task in Task Scheduler if you know what it does.

## Should it start with Windows?

Task Scheduler starts hosts as tasks fire. It is not a single Startup Apps checkbox.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Follows the task. A telemetry or maintenance task can spike, then exit

**Memory**: Small per host unless the DLL is leaky

**Disk**: Depends on the task body

**Network**: Depends on the task body

## File information

| Executable name | taskhostw.exe |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Common legitimate path | C:\Windows\System32\taskhostw.exe |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Signature expectation | Signed by Microsoft Windows |

## Common problems

### High CPU at idle

An idle-trigger maintenance task is doing its job. Look at Task Scheduler history for the busy interval before you disable the host.

### People apply svchost advice

The 3.5 GB SvcHost split and service grouping do not apply here. Wrong article, wrong tool.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Match the PID to a task

Task Scheduler and Process Explorer can show the DLL or task name. Filename-only cleanup is how you break maintenance.

### Disable one task, not the exe

If a vendor task is the spike, disable that task. Leave the Microsoft host file alone.
