# WidgetService.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called widgetservice, widgets platform, widgets service

Windows, System Component

Widgets Platform Runtime service host. It keeps the Widgets board alive. Widgets.exe is the dashboard UI.

## What you need to know

This is the Widgets runtime service. Widgets.exe is the board you open from the taskbar.

WidgetService.exe is the Widgets Platform Runtime. Ending it is a restart test, not an uninstall. Turn Widgets off on the taskbar if you do not want either process.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from Widgets

**Same as Widgets.exe?**: No. That is the board UI

**Should I end it?**: The board will fail until it restarts

Feex says

If I never open Widgets and both processes still run, I hide Widgets on the taskbar. Killing only the service leaves the feature trying to come back.

## What is WidgetService.exe?

WidgetService.exe is the Widgets Platform Runtime service inside the WidgetsPlatformRuntime package.

## What does it do?

It hosts widget providers and keeps the board process ready. The visible dashboard is Widgets.exe and often WebView2.

## Why is it running?

Windows 11 taskbar Widgets is on. A PC with Widgets hidden should show less of this pair.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The Microsoft Widgets runtime is expected on Windows 11. A WidgetService.exe in a gadget zip is not.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WidgetsPlatformRuntime_*\WidgetService\WidgetService.exe`

- Runtime service
- UI: Widgets.exe
- Often starts WebView2

## Can I end it?

Board may fail

Ending WidgetService.exe drops providers until Windows starts it again. Hide Widgets on the taskbar for a lasting change.

## Can I remove it?

Optional feature / taskbar setting

Do not delete WindowsApps files. Use taskbar settings or Optional features guidance from Microsoft.

## Should it start with Windows?

The Widgets feature starts it. Not a vendor Startup row.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: Follows live widgets

  **Network**: News and weather tiles

  **Memory**: Moderate plus WebView2

  **Disk**: Low

## Common problems

### RAM blamed on Edge

Check Widgets.exe and WebView2 first. The full browser is msedge.exe.

### Service without the board

The runtime can sit ready. Hide the taskbar icon if you want it gone.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Right-click the taskbar > Taskbar settings > Widgets

That is the off switch.

### Do not uninstall Edge to stop Widgets

WebView2 is the embed. Different product switch.
