# WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called windowspackagemanagerserver, winget server, app installer server

Windows, System Component

App Installer / winget COM server. It is the Windows Package Manager service host inside Desktop App Installer. It is not Microsoft Store StoreDesktopExtension.exe.

## What you need to know

This is winget/App Installer server, not Microsoft Store StoreDesktopExtension.

WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe is the COM server for winget and App Installer (Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller). StoreDesktopExtension.exe is a Microsoft Store package helper. Ending this server does not cancel a Store cart. Ending StoreDesktopExtension does not stop winget.

- **Safe?**: Yes, from App Installer / winget

**Is it Store?**: No. StoreDesktopExtension is Store

**Should I end it?**: A winget or App Installer job can fail

Feex says

If winget is installing and this server is busy, I let it finish. I do not end StoreDesktopExtension thinking it is the same product.

## What is WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe?

WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe is the winget / App Installer server, not StoreDesktopExtension.exe. The package is Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller. Microsoft Store UI helpers live in the Store package.

## What does it do?

It answers COM calls from winget.exe and App Installer so packages can install. It does not draw the Store. msiexec.exe is still Windows Installer for MSI.

## Why is it running?

You ran winget, opened an .appinstaller, or another app called the package manager. A leftover after winget exits can be the COM server winding down.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The DesktopAppInstaller package server is Microsoft. A WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe in Temp is not. This is still not StoreDesktopExtension.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_*\WindowsPackageManagerServer.exe`

- Package: Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller
- Client CLI is winget.exe in the same family
- Not WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsStore\\...\StoreDesktopExtension.exe

## Can I end it?

winget / App Installer can fail

Ending the server mid-install can leave a pending package. Store installs use StoreDesktopExtension, not this file. msiexec is a different installer.

## Can I remove it?

Repair App Installer, do not delete WindowsApps

Reset or update App Installer from the Store. Do not delete StoreDesktopExtension to remove winget. Do not take ownership of WindowsApps.

## Should it start with Windows?

winget or App Installer starts the COM server on demand. It is not a Startup Apps checkbox next to Store.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: During install, hash, and extract

**Memory**: Moderate for a large package

**Disk**: Staging under the package manager cache

  **Network**: winget source downloads

## Common problems

### People reset Microsoft Store to fix winget

StoreDesktopExtension is Store. This server is App Installer. Repair the Desktop App Installer package.

### Confused with msiexec

MSI still uses msiexec.exe. winget can invoke other installers. The COM host is still this filename.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### winget --info and repair App Installer

If the server will not start, update Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller from Store. wsreset.exe is a Store cache reset, not winget.

### Open file location before you blame Store

DesktopAppInstaller is this article. Microsoft.WindowsStore\StoreDesktopExtension.exe is Store.
