# WmiPrvSE.exe

Windows Process: Microsoft Corporation

Also called wmiprvse, wmi provider host, wmiprvse.exe

Windows, System Component

WMI Provider Host. It runs Windows Management Instrumentation providers so scripts, tools, and services can query hardware and OS state.

## What you need to know

This answers WMI queries. High CPU means something is asking too often, not that WMI is malware.

WmiPrvSE.exe is WMI Provider Host. Inventory tools, System Information, and some games query it. A stuck provider or a polling script is the usual peg. Winmgmt is the service.

- **Safe?**: Yes, in System32\wbem

**High CPU?**: A query storm from an app or script

**Should I end it?**: Queries fail until it restarts

Feex says

If WMI Provider Host is the hot row, I look for the caller with Process Explorer. Ending WmiPrvSE without finding the loop only buys a minute.

## What is WmiPrvSE.exe?

WmiPrvSE.exe is WMI Provider Host. Windows starts one or more hosts so a crashing provider does not take the whole WMI service down.

## What does it do?

It loads provider DLLs and answers CIM queries. It does not host print jobs and it does not scan for viruses.

## Why is it running?

An app asked for disk serials, temperature, or product activation state. SCCM, vendor RGB tools, and broken updaters are frequent pollers.

## Why are there multiple copies?

Several WmiPrvSE.exe rows can be different provider hosts. That isolation is by design.

## Is it safe?

Usually safe

The real host is under System32\wbem. A WmiPrvSE.exe in a miner zip is using a trusted name.

A legitimate copy normally runs from:

`C:\Windows\System32\wbem\WmiPrvSE.exe`

- Expected publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Service: Winmgmt
- Find the client that is querying

## Can I end it?

Temporary relief only

Ending a host drops in-flight queries. Winmgmt will start another. If a script is looping, the CPU will return until you stop the caller.

## Can I remove it?

No

Do not delete WmiPrvSE.exe. Repair WMI with the supported repository reset only after you confirm corruption.

## Should it start with Windows?

Winmgmt starts hosts on demand. It is not a Startup Apps entry you uncheck.

## Normal resource behavior

These are contextual labels, not universal averages.

- **CPU**: The usual complaint during a tight WMI loop

**Memory**: Grows if a provider leaks

  **Disk**: Repository reads

**Network**: Remote WMI if something queries this PC

## Common problems

### RGB or motherboard software

Those apps query sensors through WMI or Win32 providers every second. Uninstall the suite as a test.

### Corrupt repository

wbemtest failures and empty System Information are the clue. Repository reset is a repair, not a first click.

## Troubleshooting

Diagnose before you change anything destructive.

### Identify the client PID

Microsoft documents Process Explorer stacks for WmiPrvSE. The caller is the fix.

### Do not disable Winmgmt to "save CPU"

Half of Windows management then fails. See the WMI service page.
