# Bluetooth Support

Windows Service: Microsoft Corporation

Also called bthserv, bluetooth support service

Windows, Microsoft

The Windows service that discovers Bluetooth devices and keeps those pairings alive.

## What you need to know

This is the Bluetooth radio helper.

bthserv discovers and keeps Bluetooth devices. A desktop with no radio can leave it off. A laptop that uses earbuds needs it.

- **Need it?**: Only if you use Bluetooth

**Safe to disable?**: Yes, on a desktop with no radio

**Headphones fail?**: Check this service before you buy a new dongle

Feex says

If Bluetooth vanished after a Windows update, I would start bthserv and the radio in Settings before I shop for a new adapter.

## What does this service do?

Display name: Bluetooth Support Service. Service name: bthserv.

The service talks to the Bluetooth stack so Settings can pair mice, headphones, and other radios.

## History on Windows

Still present

Bluetooth Support Service has shipped with Windows as the in-box Bluetooth stack matured. The service name bthserv is still present on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

| Present on | Windows 7 and later in-box stacks |
| ------------- | --------------------------------- |
| Still present | Yes, including Windows 11 |
| Discontinued | No |

## Why does Windows need it?

Windows needs a user-mode service to manage pairing and device arrival for the Bluetooth radio.

## When does it run?

It starts when Bluetooth is on or when a device is paired. Manual start is common on desktops with no radio.

## Should it always be running?

If you use Bluetooth every day, keep it available. If the PC has no adapter, it can stay off.

## Can I disable it?

Yes, if there is no Bluetooth hardware

A tower with no dongle can disable bthserv. A laptop that uses Bluetooth should keep it on. Stopping it is a test for a stuck radio, not a weekly habit.

## What happens if I disable it?

Pairing and many Bluetooth devices stop working until the service is back.

## Process host

This service commonly runs inside a host process. See svchost.exe.

## Dependencies

| Depends on | RPC |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Used by | Settings, audio devices, and input devices |

## Resource behavior

- **CPU**: Low

  **Memory**: Modest

  **Disk**: Low

**Network**: None. This is a local radio stack

## Common problems

### Devices disappear

Start the service and toggle Bluetooth in Settings. Then look at the adapter driver.

### Audio stutters

That is often the radio or interference, not a reason to delete bthserv.

## Troubleshooting

Safe steps first.

### Confirm the radio is on

Settings, then Bluetooth. A disabled radio looks like a dead service.

### Start bthserv

If the service is stopped, start it, then retry pairing.
