**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If Ableton Live.exe is the process, that is Ableton, not FL Studio. I would not hunt FL64.exe to explain an .als set.

## What is Ableton Live?

Ableton Live is a DAW built around Session clips and an Arrangement. The Windows executable is Ableton Live.exe.

## If you have never used it

Ableton Live is a DAW with Session view for clips and a live set. Ableton Live.exe is the process. It is not FL Studio. Download from ableton.com. Intro, Standard, and Suite are the editions.

## What is it used for?

**Session view**

Launch clips live. FL's channel rack is not this. This is Ableton.

**Arrangement**

A linear timeline for studio work. Still Ableton, not FL's playlist.

**Max for Live**

Suite can host Max devices. That is Ableton, not Image-Line.

## Who is it for?

- Performers who launch clips
- Producers who prefer Session view
- Anyone who opened FL looking for clip slots

## Current status

Ableton Live (2001) is a current session-view daw from Ableton. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.ableton.com/live/.

## How old is it?

Ableton shipped Live in 2001. FL Studio is the older FruityLoops line (1998). Session view is the Ableton idea FL does not copy 1:1. Current Live is the 12.x line people install.

| Typical install | C:\ProgramData\Ableton\Live \<version>\\ |

## File formats

## Common problems

### Missing Packs after install

Ableton downloads Packs separately. That is not an FL plugin scan.

### Audio device exclusive mode

ASIO settings live in Live Preferences. Windows Sound alone may not fix it.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm Ableton Live.exe

ProgramData\Ableton or Program Files\Ableton is the app. FL64.exe is Image-Line.

### Authorize at ableton.com

A keygen is malware. Use the official account.

### Safe mode if a device crashes

Hold a modifier Ableton documents, or disable the last Pack.

## Alternatives

FL Studio and REAPER overlap. FL Studio does not open .als natively.
