# Adobe Acrobat

Application: Adobe

Also called acrobat pro, acrobat standard, adobe acrobat dc

Adobe, Productivity

Adobe's paid PDF editor. The process is Acrobat.exe. Acrobat Reader is the free viewer. Photoshop is pixels, not this PDF app.

## What you need to know

Acrobat is the paid editor. Reader is the free viewer. Photoshop is not either.

Acrobat.exe with an Acrobat Pro or Standard license edits PDFs. get.adobe.com/reader is the free viewer. Photoshop is a pixel editor. The 64-bit unified installer can share an image name. The license is what you paid for.

- **What is it?**: Paid PDF editor (Pro or Standard)

**Same as Reader?**: No. Reader is the free viewer

**Same as Photoshop?**: No. Photoshop is pixels

Feex says

If you cannot edit the PDF, I would check whether you have Acrobat or only Reader. A Reader install is the free viewer. Photoshop will not become a PDF editor.

## What is Adobe Acrobat?

Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Pro) is the paid PDF editor. Acrobat.exe is the usual Windows image. Acrobat Reader is the free viewer. Photoshop is Photoshop.exe and a different Creative Cloud app.

## If you have never used it

If you need to edit pages, merge PDFs, or prepare a form, this is paid Adobe Acrobat, not Acrobat Reader and not Photoshop. Buy or start it from adobe.com/acrobat. Reader is the free viewer at get.adobe.com/reader. Photoshop opens PSD files. A 64-bit Reader install can also show Acrobat.exe. The license still decides whether you have the editor.

## What is it used for?

**Edit and organize PDFs**

Insert pages, edit text, export. Reader cannot do this job. That is the product split Adobe sells.

**Forms, signatures, and redaction (Pro)**

Pro-only tools. Reader can fill some forms. It cannot run a Pro redaction workflow.

**Create PDF from Office**

Acrobat printer and Office add-ins. Photoshop export to PDF is not this editor.

## Who is it for?

- People who pay for Acrobat Standard or Pro
- Offices that prepare contracts and forms
- Anyone who should not install Reader and expect the editor

## Current status

Actively developed as Acrobat Continuous / DC. This article is the paid Windows editor, not Reader.

## How old is it?

Adobe Acrobat launched in 1993 with the PDF format. Reader was the free companion viewer. They have never been the same SKU. Photoshop is a 1990 raster editor, not a PDF suite.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current Windows release Adobe lists for Acrobat |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Adobe lists several GB for Acrobat. Huge scanned PDFs want more |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Acrobat.exe | Paid Acrobat editor (Pro or Standard) |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------- |
| AcroCEF.exe | HTML views inside Acrobat |

## Startup components

Acrobat starts when you open a PDF if it is the default. Adobe helpers can sit in the tray for updates. That is not Reader's smaller viewer-only install.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

PDF, FDF, XFDF

## Common problems

### Reader installed when the job needed Pro

Edit, combine, and many export tools are Acrobat. Reinstalling Reader will not add them.

### People open a PDF in Photoshop to "edit text"

Photoshop rasterizes the page. Use Acrobat for PDF text, not Photoshop.

## Getting unstuck

### Check the About box and the Adobe account license

Acrobat Pro / Standard versus Acrobat Reader. If About says Reader, you have the free viewer even if Task Manager shows Acrobat.exe on a 64-bit unified install.

### Install or license from adobe.com/acrobat, not get.adobe.com/reader

Those are different product pages. Reader's page will not sell you the editor by accident if you read the title.

### Repair from Creative Cloud or Adobe's Acrobat installer

Do not download Acrobat.exe from a filename mill.

## Alternatives

Acrobat Reader for viewing, Foxit PDF Editor (PhantomPDF) for another paid editor, and PDF24 for a free toolbox. Reader is the sibling this article is not.
