## What you need to know

After Effects composites. Premiere cuts the long timeline.

Adobe After Effects is a composition app for motion graphics, titles, and visual effects. A composition is not a two-hour NLE sequence. Premiere Pro is the timeline editor. Media Encoder can render an After Effects composition in the background.

If AfterFX.exe is the heavy process, someone is rendering a composition, not cutting a feature in Premiere. I would not hunt for Adobe Premiere Pro.exe to explain that CPU spike.

## What is Adobe After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is a compositing and motion-graphics application. Compositions, layers, and keyframes are the document. The Windows executable is AfterFX.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you have never used After Effects, it is the Adobe app for titles, motion graphics, and composites. It is not Premiere. You do not cut a two-hour interview here. You build a composition, preview it, then render or send it to Media Encoder. Install it from Creative Cloud.

## What is it used for?

**Motion graphics and titles**

Lower thirds, animated type, and designed bumpers. Premiere can host the result. AE makes it.

**Compositing and VFX**

Stack footage, keys, and 3D layers in a composition. This is not a long-form NLE bin.

**Hand-off to Media Encoder**

Queue a composition so AfterFX.exe is not the only process doing the overnight render.

- Editors who send a title job out of Premiere
- Anyone who opened AE looking for a multi-cam timeline

## Current status

Actively developed as a Creative Cloud desktop app. This article is the Windows After Effects app, not Premiere Pro.

## How old is it?

After Effects shipped in 1993 from CoSA, then Aldus, then Adobe. It is older than Premiere Pro (2003) and it is still a composition app, not an NLE. Current builds are Creative Cloud branded releases.

## Startup components

After Effects does not need to start with Windows. A leftover Media Encoder queue is a sibling, not a Windows service.

## Common problems

### Treated as a long-form editor

A feature-length cut belongs in Premiere. After Effects will open footage. That does not make it an NLE.

### Preview ate the disk cache

AE writes a disk cache for frames. A full drive looks like a mysterious freeze.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm AfterFX.exe

Open file location. Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects is the app. The process name is AfterFX.exe, not Premiere.

### Purge or move the disk cache

Edit > Purge and the Media & Disk Cache preferences are the After Effects tools. This is not Premiere media cache.

### Render in Media Encoder if the UI locks

Queue the composition. After Effects is the authoring app. Media Encoder is the background renderer.

## Alternatives

Cinema 4D, Blender, and Premiere overlap at the edges. Premiere does not replace After Effects for a designed title. Media Encoder does not replace After Effects for authoring.

## Related hardware

RAM for preview frames and a fast cache drive matter more than a famous CPU name. Adobe documents GPU-accelerated effects separately from Premiere Mercury Playback.
