# Adobe Lightroom

Application: Adobe

Also called lightroom, lightroom cc, adobe lightroom

Adobe, Creative

Adobe's cloud-catalog photo editor. Lightroom.exe is the process. It is not Photoshop and it is not Lightroom Classic.

## What you need to know

This Lightroom is the cloud catalog. Classic is the older desktop catalog.

Cloud Lightroom syncs a library through Creative Cloud. Lightroom Classic keeps a local .lrcat file. Photoshop is a pixel compositor. Both can show Lightroom.exe. The install folder tells them apart.

- **What is it?**: Cloud catalog photo editor

**Same as Classic?**: No. Classic is the local catalog

**Same as Photoshop?**: No. Photoshop is a pixel editor

Feex says

If the photos live in the cloud library, this is Lightroom, not Lightroom Classic and not Photoshop. I would not treat a missing catalog folder as a broken camera driver.

## What is Adobe Lightroom?

Adobe Lightroom is the cloud-catalog photo app. Originals sync through an Adobe account. Lightroom.exe can also belong to Classic. The folder name tells them apart.

## If you have never used it

This article is the cloud Lightroom app: a library that syncs through Creative Cloud. Lightroom Classic is the older desktop catalog with a local .lrcat file. Photoshop is a pixel editor, not a catalog. Read the Start menu: Adobe Lightroom vs Adobe Lightroom Classic. Install from Creative Cloud, not a "Lightroom free" host.

## What is it used for?

**Cloud photo library**

Import and browse a library that syncs to phones. Classic keeps a local catalog instead.

**Raw develop**

Exposure and masking on a camera file. Jump to Photoshop when you need pixel layers.

**Presets and share**

Apply a develop preset and export JPEG. This is not the Windows Photos album.

## Who is it for?

- Photographers who want one library on a PC and a phone
- Photography plan users who also have Photoshop
- Anyone who installed Classic and expected cloud albums

## Current status

Actively developed. Adobe still sells Lightroom and Lightroom Classic as two products. This article is the cloud desktop app.

## How old is it?

Adobe shipped Lightroom in 2007 as a desktop catalog. In 2017 the name split: Lightroom Classic kept the local catalog, and Lightroom (once Lightroom CC) became the cloud library. A 2007-2016 Lightroom box is the Classic ancestor, not this cloud app.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 8 GB minimum. Adobe recommends 16 GB |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Lightroom.exe | Cloud Lightroom or Classic. Read the install folder |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |

## Startup components

Cloud Lightroom can sync while a window is open. That is an Adobe account feature, not a Windows service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------- |

## File formats

DNG, JPEG, RAW camera files

## Common problems

### Installed Classic by habit

A local .lrcat file is Lightroom Classic. Cloud albums are this Lightroom. They do not share one catalog.

### Sync paused

Cloud originals need Adobe account storage. That is not a camera driver failure.

## Getting unstuck

### Read the Start menu name

Adobe Lightroom vs Adobe Lightroom Classic. Open file location if the names look identical.

### Check Creative Cloud storage

A full quota looks like a mysterious import stall.

### Do not migrate by renaming folders

Copying a .lrcat into the cloud app does not convert it. Use Adobe's documented move.

## Alternatives

Lightroom Classic is the local-catalog sibling. darktable, RawTherapee, and Capture One overlap for raw develop. Photoshop is the pixel editor for composites.
