# Adobe Photoshop

Application: Adobe

Also called photoshop, ps, adobe ps

Adobe, Image Editing, Professional Software

Adobe's professional image editing and compositing application.

## What you need to know

Photoshop is Adobe's professional image editing and compositing application.

It is commonly used by photographers, designers, artists, and creative professionals. Large documents and complex workflows can demand significant RAM, GPU, and storage resources.

- **What is it?**: Professional image editor

  **Still supported?**: Yes, actively developed

**Heavy on a PC?**: It can be, especially large files

Feex says

If Photoshop feels slow, I would look at RAM, scratch disk space, and GPU acceleration before blaming the CPU. The app is built to use as much machine as the document needs.

## What is Adobe Photoshop?

Photoshop is a raster image editor. You use it to retouch photos, composite layers, prepare graphics, and paint digitally. It is the product, not a single background process.

## If you have never used it

If you only saw Photoshop.exe in Task Manager, someone installed Adobe Photoshop. It is a paid image editor, not a Windows component and not Paint. You do not need it to browse the web. To try it, use Adobe's official trial or Creative Cloud. To remove it, use Creative Cloud or Settings > Apps, not a folder delete.

## What is it used for?

**Photo editing**

Exposure, color, healing, and print or web export from a camera file.

**Compositing**

Stack photos and graphics with masks. This is the layer document people mean by PSD.

**Graphic design**

Mockups, social assets, and raster work that InDesign or Illustrator will not own alone.

**Digital painting**

Brush and mixer workflows. Clip Studio and Krita overlap here.

**Generative editing**

Adobe Firefly features live in current Creative Cloud Photoshop, not in CS6.

## Who is it for?

- Photographers who need precise retouching and color work
- Graphic designers building layouts, mockups, and assets
- Digital artists painting or compositing on a canvas
- Marketing teams preparing campaign images
- Casual users who want more control than a phone editor

## Current status

Actively developed. Adobe ships current Photoshop through Creative Cloud. Older perpetual versions such as CS6 still exist on some PCs, but they are not the current product line.

## How old is it?

Thomas and John Knoll first shipped Photoshop in 1990. Adobe has sold it since. Creative Suite perpetual boxes (CS6 and earlier) still turn up on old PCs. Current Photoshop is a Creative Cloud app with yearly branded releases. A CS6 copy is the same family and a different support story.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| CPU | 64-bit processor, 2 GHz or faster |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 8 GB |
| GPU | 1.5 GB VRAM, DirectX 12 compatible (Windows) |
| Storage | 10 GB plus scratch space; SSD recommended |
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit (version 22H2) or later, or current macOS per Adobe |

### Recommended

| CPU | Multi-core 64-bit processor |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 16 GB or more |
| GPU | 4 GB VRAM or more, current GPU driver |
| Storage | SSD for app, documents, and scratch disk |
| Operating system | Current Windows 11 or current macOS per Adobe |

### Heavy workload

| CPU | High-core desktop or workstation CPU |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 32 GB or more for large PSB documents and 3D or video-adjacent work |
| GPU | High VRAM GPU when using GPU-accelerated filters and 3D features |
| Storage | Fast SSD with substantial free scratch space |
| Operating system | Current supported OS with current GPU drivers |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Moderate to high, depending on filters and document size

**GPU demand**: High when acceleration is on

**RAM demand**: High on large layered files

**Storage demand**: High scratch-disk use during edits

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Photoshop.exe | Main application process |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Adobe Crash Processor.exe | Crash reporting helper |
| Creative Cloud processes | Installer, sync, and licensing helpers when CC is installed |

## Startup components

Creative Cloud can leave background updaters and helper processes running after you close Photoshop. Those are part of the Adobe desktop stack, not Photoshop itself. You can usually quit Photoshop without quitting Creative Cloud.

## File locations

| Typical Windows install | C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2026\ Year folder changes with the release |
| ------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Scratch disk default | Startup disk, unless you set another drive in Preferences |
| Common settings location | Not fully enumerated in this preview |

## File formats

PSD, PSB, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, HEIF

## Common problems

### Scratch disk full

Photoshop writes temporary data while you work. If the scratch disk fills up, the app can refuse to save or launch. Free space or move the scratch disk to a larger drive.

### High memory use

Large documents, smart objects, and history states consume RAM. This is often normal. Closing unused documents and lowering history states can help.

### GPU acceleration problems

A bad GPU driver can cause flicker, black canvas, or crashes. Adobe documents a path to disable GPU drawing as a test. Update the vendor driver before you assume the file is corrupt.

### Plugin conflicts

Third-party plugins can break launch or export. Start with plugins disabled if Photoshop fails right after an update.

### Slow startup

Font loading, extension panels, and Creative Cloud checks can delay the first window. This is usually inconvenience, not a broken install.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm it is Adobe Photoshop

Open file location. Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop \<year> is the app. A Photoshop.exe in Downloads is not.

### Start from Creative Cloud if the year folder moved

The Start tile and the year folder change with the release. Creative Cloud is the supported launch path.

### Scratch disk before a reinstall

Preferences > Scratch Disks. Free space or pick a second drive. Adobe documents this as a first launch failure cause.

## Alternatives

Affinity Photo, GIMP, Photopea, and Pixelmator Pro cover overlapping jobs. They are not drop-in Photoshop clones. Choose them for price, simplicity, or a specific workflow, not because a list ranked them.

## Official help and downloads

Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.

## Related hardware

RAM and a working GPU matter more than a famous CPU name for most photo work. A capable older desktop CPU such as a 12th-gen Core i7 can still run Photoshop well if memory and storage keep up.
