# Affinity Publisher

Application: Serif

Also called affinity publisher 2, serif publisher

Serif, Creative

Serif's page-layout sibling. Publisher.exe is the process. It is not InDesign.

## What you need to know

Affinity Publisher is Publisher.exe. It is not InDesign.

Serif's Publisher.exe paginates books. InDesign is Adobe's INDD app. A .afpub file is this product.

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

Feex says

If Publisher.exe is the process, that is Affinity Publisher, not InDesign. I would not hunt InDesign.exe to explain a .afpub file.

## What is Affinity Publisher?

Affinity Publisher is a page-layout app. A .afpub document holds spreads. The Windows executable for v2 is Publisher.exe.

## If you have never used it

Affinity Publisher is Serif's page-layout app. Publisher.exe is the v2 app. It is not InDesign. StudioLink can open Photo and Designer personas inside a layout. Canva later launched a unified Affinity app.

## What is it used for?

**Books and brochures**

Facing pages and master pages. InDesign uses INDD. This app uses .afpub.

**StudioLink personas**

Edit a placed Photo or Designer object without leaving Publisher. InDesign does not use this name.

**Press PDF**

Export PDF for print. Package collects links the way InDesign Package does.

## Who is it for?

- People who bought Publisher 2
- Users avoiding an InDesign subscription
- Anyone laying out a book without INDD

## Current status

v2 Publisher.exe still runs for existing licenses. Canva's 2025 unified Affinity app is the new download path.

## How old is it?

Serif shipped Publisher in 2019, last of the three v1 apps. Publisher 2 arrived in 2022. Canva bought Serif in 2024. Publisher.exe remains the v2 layout app beside the 2025 unified download.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 May 2020 (2004) or later, 64-bit, per Serif v2 |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Publisher.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ------------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Affinity Publisher does not need to start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Affinity\Publisher 2\\ |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------- |

## File formats

AFPUB, PDF, IDML

## Common problems

### IDML import is not a full InDesign clone

Some InDesign features do not survive. Keep INDD in InDesign if those features matter.

### StudioLink greyed out

Photo and Designer must be the same installer type (MSIX or MSI), per Serif.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm Publisher.exe

Affinity Publisher 2 is the v2 folder. InDesign.exe is Adobe.

### Match Photo and Designer installers

Mixed MSIX and MSI breaks StudioLink.

### Package before you hand off

Missing links are document references, not a Windows font cache bug.

## Alternatives

InDesign and the unified Affinity app overlap. Word does not replace Publisher.exe for a multi-page book.
