# AutoHotkey

Application: AutoHotkey Foundation

Also called ahk, autohotkey v2, autohotkey v1

AutoHotkey Foundation, System

Hotkey and automation scripts for Windows. v1 versus v2 syntax differs. The process is AutoHotkey.exe. It is not Power Automate.

## What you need to know

AutoHotkey is local scripts. v1 versus v2 differs. It is not Power Automate.

AutoHotkey.exe runs .ahk files. v2 syntax is not v1. Power Automate is a Microsoft product.

- **What is it?**: Scripting and hotkeys

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If a .ahk file throws a v2 syntax error, I check whether it is v1. I do not open Power Automate for that script.

## What is AutoHotkey?

AutoHotkey runs .ahk scripts. v1 and v2 are different languages. Power Automate flows will not open here.

## If you have never used it

If you want a keyboard shortcut that types text or remaps keys, AutoHotkey is a script file plus an interpreter. Install it from autohotkey.com. v2 is current and v1 scripts often break. Power Automate is Microsoft's cloud/desktop flow product, not this exe.

## What is it used for?

**Hotkeys and remaps**

.ahk files. Power Automate desktop flows are a different editor.

**Window automation**

Send, click, and window titles. This is still AHK, not a cloud flow.

**v1 versus v2**

Current docs are v2. A v1 script needs v1 or a port. That is the usual break.

## Who is it for?

- People remapping keys
- Anyone who received a .ahk file
- Users told to "just use Power Automate" for a local hotkey

## Current status

AutoHotkey (2004) is a current scripting and hotkeys from AutoHotkey Foundation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.autohotkey.com/.

## How old is it?

AutoHotkey forked from AutoIt ideas in 2004. v2 changed syntax. A 2012 v1 script may need a rewrite. Power Automate arrived much later as a different Microsoft product.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

AutoHotkey v2

AutoHotkey v1 (legacy scripts)

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| AutoHotkey.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------- |
| AutoHotkey64.exe | 64-bit v2 interpreter on current installs |

## Startup components

A .ahk in the Startup folder is common. That is the script, not a Windows service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\AutoHotkey\\ |
| --------------- | ----------------------------- |

## File formats

AHK

## Common problems

### v1 script on a v2-only install

Install v1 or port the script. Power Automate will not parse .ahk.

### Antivirus flagged a compiled .exe

Compiled AHK is a common false-positive class. Prefer the .ahk plus official interpreter.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from autohotkey.com and read the v2 docs

The docs site is versioned. A 2014 forum snippet is often v1.

### Right-click the script and compile only if you trust it

The interpreter plus .ahk is easier to audit than a random Autohotkey.exe in Downloads.

### Do not replace a local hotkey with Power Automate unless you want that stack

Different product, different cloud sign-in.

## Alternatives

PowerToys Keyboard Manager remaps keys without scripts. Power Automate is Microsoft flows. AutoIt is a cousin language.
