# Bandcamp

Application: Bandcamp

Also called bandcamp.com, bandcamp store

Bandcamp, System

An artist store. Desktop helpers exist. Most people use the site. It is not Spotify.

## What you need to know

Bandcamp sells files. Spotify streams a catalog.

The website is the store. Desktop helpers are optional. Most Foxhole PCs only need a browser and then a local player for the downloads.

- **What is it?**: Artist store. Use the website

  **Need an app?**: Usually no

**Same as Spotify?**: No. You buy files

Feex says

If you wanted the album files, I would open bandcamp.com and download the purchase. I would not install a random Bandcamp.exe, and I would not expect Spotify playlists.

## What is Bandcamp?

Bandcamp is an artist storefront. The website sells DRM-free downloads. A desktop helper is optional and not the product most people need.

## If you have never used it

If you buy albums from artists, Bandcamp is the store. Use bandcamp.com in a browser. Download the files you paid for. Desktop helpers exist, including unofficial wrappers. Most people never need Bandcamp.exe. It is not Spotify. You buy files or name-your-price albums. There is no Discover Weekly locker.

## What is it used for?

**Buy and download albums**

Pay an artist, then download FLAC or MP3. Spotify streams a licensed catalog. Those files then belong in foobar2000 if you want a local player.

**Follow artists on the site**

Collection pages live on bandcamp.com. A wrapper does not replace the store.

**Optional desktop helper**

If a helper named Bandcamp.exe exists on a PC, treat the site as the source of truth. Unofficial Electron shells are not Bandcamp’s store.

## Who is it for?

- People who buy music from artists on Bandcamp
- Listeners who then play those files in foobar2000 or MusicBee
- Anyone who should not treat this as Spotify

## Current status

Bandcamp (2008) is a current artist music store from Bandcamp. The vendor still points Windows users at https://bandcamp.com/.

## How old is it?

Bandcamp launched in 2008 as a direct-to-fan store. It is the same year as Spotify’s service and a different job: selling downloads and merch. Ownership later moved under Epic’s parent story. A 2010 “Bandcamp is only a website” memory is still the right mental model.

## Versions

Optional desktop helpers

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release plus a browser |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The site is light. Downloads want disk |

## Resource profile

- **Network demand**: Purchases and downloads

**Disk demand**: The albums you buy

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Bandcamp.exe | Optional helper. The site is the product |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------------- |

## Startup components

No official reason for Bandcamp.exe to start with Windows. A helper that does that is optional software you can remove.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\Downloads\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------- |

## File formats

FLAC, MP3, other download formats the artist offers

## Common problems

### Unofficial desktop clients

Community wrappers are not the vendor store. Use bandcamp.com and get.bandcamp.help.

### People look for a streaming locker

Collection streaming exists on the site for purchases. It is still not Spotify’s radio stack.

## Getting unstuck

### Sign in at bandcamp.com and open Collection

Redownload from the purchase email or the collection page. A wrapper cannot recreate a lost login.

### Use get.bandcamp.help for missing downloads

Vendor help covers payments and files. That is not a codec pack.

### Play downloaded files in a local player

foobar2000 or MusicBee. Bandcamp is the store, not the library engine.

## Alternatives

The Bandcamp website without any exe. Spotify if you only wanted a catalog. foobar2000 once the files are on disk.

## Official help and downloads

Start with the vendor. Random exe sites are not a support channel.
