# Bitdefender

Application: Bitdefender

Also called bitdefender antivirus, bitdefender total security, bitdefender free

Bitdefender, Security

A Romanian antivirus family whose free and paid SKUs share one brand. The agent is bdagent.exe. It is not Windows Security.

## What you need to know

Bitdefender Free and Total Security share a name. They are not the same SKU.

Bitdefender is a Romanian suite. The free Windows antivirus and the paid Total Security installer both show bdagent.exe. Total Security adds extras. Either edition should take the antivirus slot. Two live engines with Windows Security is the conflict.

- **What is it?**: Romanian AV. Free and paid share the name

**Same as Defender?**: No. It should take Defender's slot

**Which SKU?**: Check Central. Free is not Total Security

Feex says

If the window says Bitdefender Free and the receipt says Total Security, I would look at Central before I reinstall Windows. Same brand, different SKU. I would also check that Defender went passive after bdagent.exe installed.

## What is Bitdefender?

Bitdefender is a Romanian consumer antivirus. Free and paid editions share branding. bdagent.exe is the usual tray agent.

## If you have never used it

If a download page just said "Bitdefender", check whether you got Free Antivirus or Total Security. They share the name and both use bdagent.exe. Install from bitdefender.com. The suite usually takes the antivirus slot so Windows Security goes passive. If MsMpEng.exe stays live next to bdagent.exe, you have two engines. This is not Defender and not a second Bitdefender you stack on Avast.

## What is it used for?

**Resident antivirus**

The paid and free Windows apps register as the active antivirus so Defender can go passive.

**Total Security extras**

VPN minutes, extra device seats, and parental tools sit in Total Security. Free Antivirus does not ship that bundle.

**Bitdefender Central account**

Subscriptions and device list live in Central. That portal is not the scan engine.

## Who is it for?

- People who searched Bitdefender Free and landed on a paid SKU page
- Users whose OEM or retail box said Total Security
- Anyone with bdagent.exe next to a still-running Defender scan

## Current status

Actively sold. This article is the Windows consumer app, not Bitdefender GravityZone.

## How old is it?

Bitdefender Softwin shipped the consumer line in the early 2000s. Current Windows SKUs are Free Antivirus, Antivirus Plus, Internet Security, and Total Security. A 2010 Total Security box is the same vendor, not the current installer.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per Bitdefender consumer support. Older pages still mention Windows 7 SP1 |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Bitdefender lists 2 GB RAM for the Windows security apps |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Resident shield plus scheduled scans

**RAM demand**: Heavier than in-box Defender on small machines

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| bdagent.exe | Bitdefender agent in the tray |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------- |
| vsserv.exe | Virus shield service on many installs |

## Startup components

bdagent.exe starts with Windows while the product owns protection. That is expected for a resident suite.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Bitdefender\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------ |

## Common problems

### Free versus paid confusion

The product name on the window can still say Bitdefender while the license is Total Security or the other way around. Check Central.

### bdagent.exe plus live MsMpEng.exe

Bitdefender should own realtime. If Defender is still scanning, both products are fighting over files.

## Getting unstuck

### Open Windows Security after install

Virus and threat protection should name Bitdefender. If it still names Microsoft Defender, the slot did not switch.

### Match the SKU in Bitdefender Central

Free Antivirus, Antivirus Plus, and Total Security are different licenses. Uninstall the leftover SKU before you add another Bitdefender.

### Install only from bitdefender.com

A "Bitdefender 2026 full" third-party host is not the Romanian vendor.

## Alternatives

Windows Security if you want the in-box engine. Do not stack Bitdefender on Avast or Norton.

Bitdefender lists about 2 GB RAM. Old CPUs can feel the resident shield more than a famous GPU name will help.
