# Bitwarden

Application: Bitwarden Inc.

Also called bit warden, bitwarden vault

Bitwarden Inc., Security

An open-source password manager with a desktop vault. The window is Bitwarden.exe. You can use their cloud or host the server yourself. It is not LastPass and not 1Password.

## What you need to know

Bitwarden is open source and can be self-hosted. LastPass is not that product.

Bitwarden.exe is the Windows vault. You can use Bitwarden's cloud or host the server. 1Password is a paid closed vault with Watchtower. KeePass stores a local kdbx. LastPass is an older cloud vendor people leave after 2022.

- **What is it?**: Open-source vault. Self-host is optional

**Same as LastPass?**: No. Different vendor and server story

**Same as 1Password?**: No. 1Password is paid and not self-hosted

Feex says

If someone said every password manager is the same cloud blob, I would stop them. Bitwarden can be self-hosted. 1Password cannot. KeePass is a local kdbx with no official Bitwarden server. LastPass is a different vendor with a different breach history.

## What is Bitwarden?

Bitwarden is an open-source password manager. Bitwarden.exe is the Windows desktop vault. Self-hosting the server is optional and official.

## If you have never used it

If you want a vault you can audit and optionally host yourself, Bitwarden is that product. Download the Windows app from bitwarden.com/download. Bitwarden.exe is the desktop client. The vault can live on bitwarden.com or on a server you run. It is not LastPass, not 1Password Watchtower, and not a local-only KeePass kdbx file unless you chose that elsewhere.

## What is it used for?

**Cloud or self-hosted vault**

Logins sync through Bitwarden's service or a server you host. 1Password does not sell a self-host option like this.

**Desktop unlock and fill**

Bitwarden.exe unlocks the vault on Windows. Browser extensions talk to that vault. LastPass is a different cloud vendor.

**Organizations and sharing**

Paid orgs share items. That is Bitwarden Organizations, not KeePass's local kdbx email dance.

## Who is it for?

- People who want an open-source vault with an official Windows app
- Users who self-host Bitwarden and still use Bitwarden.exe as the client
- Anyone leaving LastPass who should not assume 1Password is the same license

## Current status

Actively developed. This article is the Windows desktop client, not the browser extension alone.

## How old is it?

Bitwarden launched in 2016 as an open-source vault. It is younger than KeePass (2003) and 1Password (2006). Current Windows builds are Electron. A 2016 early web vault screenshot is not the current desktop app.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per Bitwarden desktop downloads |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The Electron vault is a few hundred MB class. The secrets are small |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Low except during unlock and import

**Network demand**: Sync when the vault is online

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Bitwarden.exe | Desktop vault window |
| ------------- | -------------------- |

## Startup components

Bitwarden.exe can start at logon if you allow the tray. That is a Bitwarden setting, not a Windows service you must keep.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Bitwarden\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------- |

## File formats

JSON export, CSV import, encrypted vault

## Common problems

### People treat it as LastPass

Different company, different server, optional self-host. Importing a LastPass CSV is a migration, not the same app.

### Desktop app versus only the extension

Bitwarden.exe is the Windows vault. An extension-only setup is still Bitwarden but not this process.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from bitwarden.com/download

A "Bitwarden Pro" third-party exe is not the vendor. The official client is Bitwarden.exe.

### Confirm cloud versus self-host URL

The desktop app asks which server. vault.bitwarden.com is the vendor. A LAN URL is your host. 1Password has no this field.

### Unlock, then check the extension

Locked Bitwarden.exe will not fill. That is a vault lock, not a Windows Credential Manager failure.

## Alternatives

1Password if you want a paid closed vault and Watchtower. KeePass or KeePassXC if you want only a local kdbx. LastPass if you already live there and accept that vendor.

## Related hardware

The desktop vault is light. Sync needs a network. Self-host hardware is a server question, not this PC's GPU.
