# Cisco Jabber

Application: Cisco Systems

Also called jabber, cisco jabber windows

Cisco Systems, Productivity

Cisco enterprise IM and softphone. On Windows the process is CiscoJabber.exe.

## What you need to know

Cisco Jabber is enterprise IM and a softphone. It is not Webex Meetings.

CiscoJabber.exe is the Windows Jabber client. webex.exe is Webex Meetings. You cannot replace a Jabber account with a consumer Webex download.

- **What is it?**: Enterprise IM

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If CiscoJabber.exe is the chat process, I would treat it as the softphone client, not Webex Meetings. Quitting webex.exe does not hang up a Jabber desk call.

## What is Cisco Jabber?

Cisco Jabber is an enterprise messenger and desk-phone replacement. The Windows executable is CiscoJabber.exe.

## If you have never used it

If IT said install Jabber, this is Cisco Jabber, not Webex Meetings. It is enterprise IM and a softphone. You do not pick a consumer download mill. The process is CiscoJabber.exe. webex.exe is the meeting client. Your admin gives the account.

## What is it used for?

**Company IM and presence**

Directory names and presence from Cisco UC. Slack is a different workspace.

**Softphone calls**

Jabber can register as a phone. That is why a headset shows up in Jabber, not in Webex Meetings alone.

**Meetings some tenants launch from Jabber**

A meeting hop can open Webex. The IM process is still CiscoJabber.exe.

## Who is it for?

- People whose IT still deploys Jabber
- Users with a desk-phone number on Cisco UC
- Anyone who downloaded Webex when they were told Jabber

## Current status

Cisco Jabber (2012) is a current enterprise im from Cisco Systems. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/unified-communications/jabber/index.html.

## How old is it?

Cisco Jabber for Windows shipped in the early 2010s (2012 as a named product line) as the IM and softphone client. Webex Meetings is a different Cisco meeting app. Current orgs are often steered toward Webex, but Jabber still appears on managed PCs.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| CiscoJabber.exe | Main Windows executable |
| --------------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

IT often sets Jabber to start with Windows so presence and the softphone are ready.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files (x86)\Cisco Systems\Cisco Jabber\\ |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

company voicemail the UC system stores

## Common problems

### Sign-in fails without the company domain

Jabber needs the UC account IT created. A Webex personal account will not register the softphone.

### People install Webex Meetings to get chat

Wrong client for many tenants. Ask IT which exe they deploy.

## Getting unstuck

### Use the IT package, not a random Jabber exe

Cisco documents Jabber for Windows on the support series page. A filename-site installer is junk.

### Check headset and desk-phone registration in Jabber

Call issues are often Jabber device selection, not Zoom settings.

### Quit CiscoJabber.exe from the tray

Presence can stay online if only the window closes.

## Alternatives

Webex if IT moved IM and meetings there. Teams if the tenant is Microsoft. Slack if that is the company chat instead.
