# Claude Application: Anthropic Also called claude desktop, anthropic claude Anthropic, Productivity Anthropic's Claude desktop app for Windows. The process is Claude.exe. The model also lives at claude.ai in a browser. ChatGPT.exe is OpenAI. ## What you need to know Claude.exe is Anthropic. ChatGPT.exe is OpenAI. The Claude Windows app is a desktop client for Anthropic's model. claude.ai in Edge is still msedge.exe. ChatGPT desktop is a different vendor. Extra Claude.exe rows are usually Electron helpers. - **What is it?**: Anthropic Claude desktop **Same as ChatGPT?**: No. Different vendor and exe **Need the app?**: No. The web UI also works Feex says If Claude.exe is here, I treat it as Anthropic's desktop app. I do not end ChatGPT.exe to quit Claude, and I do not call a claude.ai tab this process. ## What is Claude? Claude.exe hosts Anthropic chats, Projects, and Artifacts on the desktop. The model still runs on Anthropic's side. Ollama is a local runner and a different article. ## If you have never used it Claude desktop is Anthropic's signed-in window for the Claude models. Get it from claude.ai/download after you already have an Anthropic account. The folder is usually AppData\Local\AnthropicClaude. You can skip the installer and stay on claude.ai in a browser. ChatGPT.exe will not load that account. ## What is it used for? **Chat in a dedicated window** Projects and chats inside Claude.exe. chatgpt.com in Edge is a different vendor and process. **Local file context the app supports** What Anthropic documents in the desktop client. This is not a local model runner like Ollama. **Stay signed in** An Anthropic account. An OpenAI login will not open this window. ## Who is it for? - Writers who already keep Claude Projects on claude.ai - People whose work policy allows Anthropic but not OpenAI - Anyone who saw Claude.exe and thought it was a local LLM ## Current status Anthropic still ships the Windows build from claude.ai/download. Browser Claude remains the fallback if you do not want another Electron window. ## How old is it? Anthropic started as a 2021 lab. Claude the chatbot shipped on the web in 2023. The Windows wrapper arrived in 2024. Constitutional AI and Claude Projects are Anthropic names. They are not OpenAI custom GPTs. ## Versions Major channels first. A Claude AI pro listing is junk. ## Alternatives Stay on claude.ai if one more Electron host is enough pain. Ollama or LM Studio if the model must stay on this PC.
