# CrowdStrike Falcon

Application: CrowdStrike

Also called falcon sensor, crowdstrike sensor, csfalconservice

CrowdStrike, Security

Enterprise EDR. The service is CSFalconService.exe. You do not download this from a consumer site. IT deploys it from a Falcon console with a CID.

## What you need to know

Falcon is enterprise EDR. There is no consumer download.

CSFalconService.exe is the CrowdStrike sensor. IT installs it from the Falcon console with a CID. It is not Windows Security, not Malwarebytes, and not a home antivirus. Two engines is a policy question.

- **What is it?**: Enterprise EDR sensor

**Home download?**: No. Falcon console plus CID only

**Same as Defender?**: No. Work agent. Policy decides coexistence

Feex says

If CSFalconService.exe is present, I would treat it as a work sensor, not a free AV. I would not download a "Falcon home" exe. I would ask IT if Defender should also be live. I would not invent a Feex EDR.

## What is CrowdStrike Falcon?

CrowdStrike Falcon is enterprise EDR. CSFalconService.exe is the Windows sensor service. There is no consumer storefront installer.

## If you have never used it

If you see CSFalconService.exe, this is CrowdStrike Falcon, not Windows Security and not a home antivirus you chose. You do not download Falcon from a consumer "free AV" site. IT pulls WindowsSensor.exe from the Falcon console and installs it with a customer ID. Defender may stay on or go passive by policy. Two live engines is an IT question, not a home double-install. The July 2024 sensor update outage is why people remember Falcon. It is still not a consumer product.

## What is it used for?

**Work endpoint telemetry**

The sensor reports to the Falcon cloud. That is not Malwarebytes Premium you bought yourself.

**IT response actions**

Containment and isolation come from the console. You do not get a home "scan now" store page.

**Policy next to Defender**

Some tenants leave Defender on, some do not. That pair is an admin choice. It is not a Foxhole consumer tip to stack them.

## Who is it for?

- Employees who found CSFalconService.exe on a work PC
- People who should not search "CrowdStrike download" on a filename host
- Admins who already have a Falcon tenant

## Current status

Actively sold to organizations. This article is the Windows sensor, not a home SKU.

## How old is it?

CrowdStrike launched Falcon in the 2010s as cloud EDR. The Windows sensor is an enterprise agent. July 2024 is when a bad sensor update kept many PCs at a boot screen. Current sensors still come from the console, not crowdstrike.com marketing PDFs alone.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows versions CrowdStrike lists for the sensor your tenant assigned |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enterprise endpoint class. IT's standard image, not a consumer 2 GB claim |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Resident sensor plus update events

  **Network demand**: Constant cloud channel

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| CSFalconService.exe | Falcon sensor service. Not a home AV download |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| CSFalconContainer.exe | Sensor helper on many endpoints |

## Startup components

CSFalconService.exe starts with Windows on a managed PC. You should not remove it from startup to save a little CPU.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\CrowdStrike\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------ |

## Common problems

### Consumer-looking "Falcon download" pages

The real installer is behind a tenant login. A public exe named CrowdStrike is a fake.

### Sensor plus live Defender without policy

On a home-like setup this should not happen. On a work PC, ask IT which product owns realtime. Two live engines can still fight.

## Getting unstuck

### Do not uninstall from Settings unless IT said so

Falcon can require a maintenance token. Removing it yourself can violate policy and leave the PC unmanaged.

### Confirm Program Files\CrowdStrike

CSFalconService.exe belongs there. A Downloads copy is not the sensor IT deployed.

### Ask IT about Defender coexistence

Windows Security may show Falcon, Defender, or both by policy. That page is the owner story, not a forum "turn both on" tip.

## Alternatives

Windows Security on a home PC. Work alternatives are other EDR products IT chose. Sophos Home is a household SKU, not a Falcon replacement you download to compete with IT.

## Related hardware

The sensor is built to stay resident. CPU spikes follow detections and updates. That is an enterprise agent, not a GPU game overlay.
