# DaVinci Resolve

Application: Blackmagic Design

Also called resolve, davinci, blackmagic resolve

Blackmagic Design, Creative

A color-first NLE with a capable free edition. Resolve.exe is the process. It is not Premiere.

## What you need to know

Resolve is Blackmagic's color-first NLE. It is not Premiere.

DaVinci Resolve edits and grades in one app. Premiere is Adobe's timeline NLE. A Resolve project library is not a Premiere .prproj.

- **What is it?**: Color-first video editor

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If Resolve.exe is the process, that is Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, not Premiere. I would not hunt Adobe Premiere Pro.exe to explain a Resolve project library.

## What is DaVinci Resolve?

DaVinci Resolve is a nonlinear editor that started as a color system. The Windows executable is Resolve.exe.

## If you have never used it

DaVinci Resolve is Blackmagic's editor. Color, edit, Fusion, and Fairlight pages live in one app. It is not Premiere. A free edition exists. Studio is the paid unlock. Download the Windows installer from Blackmagic, not a random Resolve.exe host.

## What is it used for?

**Color page**

Primary and secondary grade. Premiere has Lumetri. Resolve is color-first.

**Edit page**

A timeline NLE. Premiere overlaps. The project file is still a Resolve database.

**Fusion and Fairlight**

Compositing and audio pages in the same app. After Effects and Audition are Adobe siblings, not this.

## Who is it for?

- Colorists who live on the Color page
- Editors using the free edition
- Anyone comparing Resolve.exe with Premiere

## Current status

DaVinci Resolve (2004) is a current color-first video editor from Blackmagic Design. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve.

## How old is it?

da Vinci Systems built color suites first. Blackmagic bought the line and shipped Resolve as a desktop NLE. The 2004 era is color hardware. Current Resolve is the free-plus-Studio Windows app.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 16 GB class, per Blackmagic. Fusion and 4K want 32 GB |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Resolve.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ----------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Resolve does not need to start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

DRP, BRAW, MP4, MOV

## Common problems

### Free edition missing Studio features

Noise reduction and some effects are Studio. That is a license, not a broken GPU.

### Database vs folder project confusion

Resolve can use a PostgreSQL or local disk library. That is not a Premiere cache.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm Resolve.exe

Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve is the app. Premiere is Adobe.

### Read Blackmagic GPU notes

Blackmagic documents GPU and RAM floors. 16 GB is the usual talk for current Resolve.

### Download from Blackmagic only

A 'Resolve Studio crack' is malware. The free edition is official.

## Alternatives

Premiere, Shotcut, and Media Encoder overlap at the edges. Premiere does not replace the Color page.

## Related hardware

Blackmagic lists 16 GB RAM class machines for current Resolve. Fusion and 4K want more. A supported GPU matters.
