# EA app

Application: Electronic Arts

Also called ea desktop, ea launcher, origin replacement

Electronic Arts, Games

EA’s current launcher. Origin was the previous client and is shut down. The process is EADesktop.exe. It is not Steam.

## What you need to know

The EA app replaced Origin. Steam can still start EADesktop.exe.

EADesktop.exe is the only supported EA client. Origin is shut down. Many Steam EA installs still require this app. That two-client tax is EA’s, not GOG’s.

- **What is it?**: Current EA launcher. Origin is gone

**Need it on Steam?**: EA says yes for EA PC games

  **32-bit Windows?**: Not supported

Feex says

If Origin will not sign in, I would install the EA app from ea.com. I would not repair upc.exe for an EA title, and I would not look for Fortnite here.

## What is EA app?

The EA app is Electronic Arts’ current Windows launcher. EADesktop.exe is the process. Origin is retired.

## If you have never used it

If you play Apex, FC, Battlefield, or another EA PC title, this is the 2022 client that replaced Origin. Download it from ea.com/ea-app. Sign in with the same EA Account you used on Origin. It is not Steam. EA says the app is required to play EA games on PC, including many titles you bought on Steam or Epic. Origin has shut down. A leftover Origin.exe will not sign in. GOG’s optional client is the opposite rule.

## What is it used for?

**EA library after Origin**

See the games that used to live in Origin. Installing Origin.exe is the wrong repair. Ubisoft Connect never hosted this library.

**Required even on Steam**

EA documents that Steam or Epic launches still need this app. That is an EA rule, not Epic’s Fortnite hub and not Riot’s Vanguard story.

**EA Play**

EA’s subscription catalog appears here. Xbox Game Pass can also surface some EA titles, then still start this client.

## Who is it for?

- People whose EA games used to live in Origin
- Players who bought EA titles on Steam and still need EADesktop.exe
- Anyone on 32-bit Windows, which the EA app does not support

## Current status

EA app (2022) is a current publisher launcher from Electronic Arts. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.ea.com/ea-app.

## How old is it?

Origin was EA’s 2011-era client. The EA app left beta in 2022 as the 64-bit replacement. Origin later shut down. This is newer than Ubisoft’s Uplay line and much newer than Battle.net’s name. A 2018 “open Origin to fix FIFA” guide is the dead client.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, per EA. No 32-bit client |
| ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The client is light. Games set the real bar |

## Resource profile

- **Network demand**: Sign-in, EA Play, and updates

**Disk demand**: High while an EA title downloads

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| EADesktop.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| EABackgroundService.exe | Background helper on many installs |

## Startup components

The EA app can start with Windows from its settings. Turn that off if you only launch from Steam and accept the extra wait.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\\ |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

## Common problems

### Origin still installed

Origin has shut down. Uninstall it after the EA app has the library. Help articles cover the move.

### 32-bit Windows

EA documents no 32-bit EA app. That is an OS architecture limit, not a missing game file.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from ea.com/ea-app, not an Origin mirror

The current installer is the EA app. OriginSetup is the retired path.

### Sign in with the old Origin email

The EA Account is the same login. A new account will look empty even if Steam shows the game.

### Let Steam start the EA app, then repair inside EA

Verify on the EA side for EA-owned files. Valve’s verify does not replace EA’s client.

## Alternatives

Steam still sells some EA games, then starts this app. Xbox app for Game Pass. Playnite can list both. Origin is not an alternative anymore.
