# Evernote

Application: Bending Spoons

Also called evernote desktop, evernote clipper

Bending Spoons, Productivity

A long-running clipper notes app, now owned by Bending Spoons. The process is Evernote.exe. It is not OneNote.

## What you need to know

Evernote is Evernote.exe under Bending Spoons. OneNote is Microsoft.

The clipper-and-notebook product dates to 2008. Ownership moved to Bending Spoons. OneNote will not open an Evernote export as native sections without a conversion.

Feex says

If Evernote.exe will not sync, I would check the Bending Spoons account and plan limits before I repair OneNote. Those notebooks are not Microsoft sections.

## What is Evernote?

Evernote is a notebook and web-clipper product. Evernote.exe is the Windows desktop app. OneNote is ONENOTE.EXE. They do not share a file format.

## If you have never used it

If you have years of clipped articles in Evernote notebooks, this is Evernote, not OneNote. Download the Windows app from evernote.com/download. Bending Spoons owns the product now. OneNote is Microsoft and stores sections differently. The web clipper is a browser add-on, not this exe alone.

## What is it used for?

**Notebooks and tags**

Notes with tags and stacks. OneNote uses notebooks, sections, and pages instead.

**Web clipper**

Save pages from a browser into Evernote. That clipper is not Send to OneNote.

**Search in clipped PDFs**

Paid plans emphasize search inside attachments. That is Evernote indexing, not Windows Search.

## Who is it for?

- People with a long Evernote archive
- Users who clip quickly and search later
- Anyone who should not open those notes in OneNote and expect the same tags

## Current status

Actively developed under Bending Spoons. Plan limits changed after the acquisition. This article is the Windows desktop app.

## How old is it?

Evernote launched in 2008 as an early clipper-and-notebook app. Bending Spoons acquired it in 2022 to 2023. It is older than Notion and not the 2003 OneNote line. A 2010s "Evernote vs OneNote" blog is still describing two vendors.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Evernote.exe | Windows desktop app |
| ------------ | ------------------- |

## Startup components

Evernote can start with Windows from its own setting. That is the Evernote tray, not OneNote.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Evernote\Evernote.exe |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

ENEX, HTML export, PDF

## Common problems

### Plan and device limits after the sale

Bending Spoons changed free-tier rules. That is an account issue, not a Windows bug.

### Import to OneNote is a conversion

Microsoft and third-party importers exist. They are not a live two-way sync.

## Getting unstuck

### Sign in at evernote.com if the desktop app loops

The account is Evernote's, not a Microsoft account. OneNote sign-in will not open it.

### Install from evernote.com/download

A "Evernote plus" search ad is the wrong file.

### Export a notebook before you cancel a paid plan

Evernote documents export formats. That is not a OneNote .one package.

## Alternatives

OneNote, Notion, and Joplin overlap for notes. OneNote is the Microsoft sibling. Joplin is local Markdown.

## Related hardware

The desktop app wants RAM for a large local cache. A GPU does not speed clip search.
