# ExpressVPN

Application: Kape

Also called express vpn, lightway

Kape, Security

A consumer VPN. Lightway is their protocol name. The window is ExpressVPN.exe. It is not NordVPN. Kape also owns PIA.

## What you need to know

ExpressVPN uses Lightway. NordVPN uses NordLynx. Different apps.

ExpressVPN.exe is the Kape consumer VPN. Lightway is their protocol. PIA is a sister brand. NordVPN is a competitor. Tailscale is a mesh, not this product.

- **What is it?**: Kape consumer VPN. Lightway is their protocol

**Same as NordVPN?**: No. Different company and exe

**Same as PIA?**: Sister Kape brand, different client

Feex says

If Lightway is the protocol in the window, this is ExpressVPN, not NordVPN. I would not run it next to PIA just because Kape owns both. I would not treat it as Tailscale.

## What is ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN is a consumer VPN under Kape. ExpressVPN.exe is the Windows client. Lightway is their protocol name.

## If you have never used it

If you paid ExpressVPN, this is the Kape consumer VPN, not NordVPN. Download it from expressvpn.com/latest. ExpressVPN.exe is the Windows client. Lightway is their protocol name. Private Internet Access is a sister Kape brand with a different exe. This is not Tailscale.

## What is it used for?

**Consumer VPN tunnel**

Country servers for privacy or geo unlock. Not a Tailscale tailnet of your own PCs.

**Lightway protocol**

Lightway is ExpressVPN's name. Nord calls theirs NordLynx. PIA has its own client.

**Split tunnel in the app**

App-level split tunnel is an ExpressVPN setting. It is not Windows built-in VPN.

## Who is it for?

- People who already pay ExpressVPN
- Users who also see PIA on the same Kape receipt
- Anyone who should not install NordVPN as a second live tunnel

## Current status

Actively sold by Kape. This article is the Windows ExpressVPN app, not PIA.

## How old is it?

ExpressVPN launched in 2009 and later joined Kape. Lightway is the in-house protocol they advertise. Current Windows builds are the ExpressVPN app, not a 2012 OpenVPN-only helper.

## Versions

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per ExpressVPN support |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| RAM | Light client |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Lightway or OpenVPN while connected

**Network demand**: All traffic while the tunnel is up

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| ExpressVPN.exe | VPN client |
| -------------- | ---------- |

## Startup components

ExpressVPN.exe can connect at logon from its settings.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files (x86)\ExpressVPN\\ |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------- |

## Common problems

### ExpressVPN plus PIA both connected

Same parent, two tunnels. Pick one Kape VPN.

### Lightway confused with WireGuard.exe

Lightway is ExpressVPN's protocol. The official WireGuard client is a different install that needs your own server.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from expressvpn.com/latest

A "ExpressVPN crate key" forum exe is not the vendor. Activation uses your ExpressVPN code.

### Switch Lightway versus OpenVPN in the app if a network blocks one

That toggle is inside ExpressVPN.exe, not Windows Settings > VPN.

### Disconnect NordVPN first

Two consumer VPNs fight over the default route.

## Alternatives

NordVPN or Mullvad for another consumer VPN. PIA if you already have that Kape brand. Tailscale if you wanted a mesh.
