Application: Image-Line

Also called fruityloops, fruity loops, flstudio

Image-Line, Creative

A pattern DAW that started as FruityLoops. FL64.exe is the process. It is not Ableton.

## What you need to know

FL Studio is the FruityLoops DAW. It is not Ableton Live.

FL64.exe is Image-Line's pattern DAW. Ableton Live is Session-view first. An .flp file is FL Studio.

Feex says

If FL64.exe is the process, that is FL Studio, formerly FruityLoops, not Ableton. I would not hunt Ableton Live.exe to explain an .flp project.

## What is FL Studio?

FL Studio is a pattern-and-playlist DAW. Projects live in .flp files. The Windows executable is FL64.exe.

## If you have never used it

FL Studio is Image-Line's DAW. It started as FruityLoops. FL64.exe is the 64-bit process. It is not Ableton Live. Download from image-line.com. Editions are Fruity, Producer, Signature, and All Plugins.

## What is it used for?

**Channel rack patterns**

Step sequences and patterns. Ableton Session clips are a different idea.

**Playlist arrangement**

Arrange patterns on a playlist. This is still FL, not Ableton Arrangement.

**Lifetime updates**

Image-Line sells a license that keeps getting versions. Ableton versions are paid upgrades.

## Who is it for?

- Beat makers who grew up on FruityLoops
- People comparing FL to Ableton
- Anyone who still searches FruityLoops

## Current status

FL Studio (1998) is a current pattern daw from Image-Line. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.image-line.com/fl-studio-download/.

## How old is it?

FruityLoops shipped in 1998. The name became FL Studio. Ableton Live shipped in 2001 with a Session view. They are different DAWs. Current FL is the 64-bit Windows build.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| FL64.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

FL Studio does not need to start with Windows.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio 21\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------ |

## File formats

FLP, WAV, MIDI, MP3

## Common problems

### 32-bit FL.exe leftover

Current Windows installs are FL64.exe. An old FL.exe is the 32-bit ancestor.

### Demo save limits

Trial cannot reopen saved projects the same way. That is Image-Line policy, not Ableton.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm FL64.exe

Program Files\Image-Line\FL Studio is the app. Ableton Live.exe is the other DAW.

### Install from image-line.com/fl-studio-download

Avoid FruityLoops crack hosts.

### Rescan plugins in FL

Options > Manage plugins. This is not Ableton's VST folder.

## Alternatives

Ableton Live and REAPER overlap. Ableton does not open .flp natively.
