# foobar2000

Application: Peter Pawlowski

Also called foobar, fb2k

Peter Pawlowski, System

A highly configurable local music player. The process is foobar2000.exe. It is not a streaming store client.

## What you need to know

foobar2000 plays files you already own. It is not a catalog subscription.

The player is famous for columns, components, and exact output settings. It does not replace Spotify, Apple Music, or a NAS media server.

- **What is it?**: A local file music player

**Need Spotify?**: No. It plays files you already have

**Where to get it?**: foobar2000.org only

Feex says

If the library is a folder of FLAC files, I would open foobar2000 before I pay another streaming bill. I would not install it expecting Discover Weekly.

## What is foobar2000?

foobar2000 is Peter Pawlowski’s Windows music player for local libraries. The process is foobar2000.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you have a folder of MP3 or FLAC files and want a player you can configure to death, this is foobar2000. Download it from foobar2000.org/download. Point it at your music folder. It is not Spotify, not a Store streaming app, and not a codec pack. The default skin looks plain on purpose.

## What is it used for?

**Local library playback**

Play folders you already ripped or bought. Components extend tags and ReplayGain. This is not a monthly catalog.

**Output control**

WASAPI and other output choices matter to people who care about the DAC path. Spotify does not expose that same stack.

**Converter and components**

Built-in converter plus a component ecosystem. AIMP skins and Spotify playlists are different products.

## Who is it for?

- People with a local music folder they actually manage
- Users who want columns, keyboard control, and components
- Anyone who should not confuse this with a streaming subscription

## Current status

foobar2000 (2002) is a current local music player from Peter Pawlowski. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.foobar2000.org/download.

## How old is it?

Peter Pawlowski released foobar2000 in 2002 as a serious local player while Winamp still owned the mainstream. It is old, still current, and still file-first. A 2020s streaming client is not this product.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Current Windows

Legacy v1.x

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Light for the player itself. Huge libraries want disk more than RAM |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Decode follows the file. DSP chains raise it

**Disk demand**: Library database plus the files you point at

**Network demand**: Optional streams and component updates, not a default catalog

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| foobar2000.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

foobar2000 does not need to start with Windows unless you added a shortcut. Playback is a window you open.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\foobar2000\\ |
| --------------- | ----------------------------- |

## File formats

FLAC, MP3, Opus, other formats the decoder pack supports

## Common problems

### Looks empty after install

It does not ship a catalog. Add a folder. That is the whole product.

### Component mismatch

A 32-bit component will not load in a 64-bit player. The FAQ covers architecture, not a codec pack from a portal.

## Getting unstuck

### Download only from foobar2000.org

Search ads still wrap the name. The real installer is on the author’s site.

### Reset the layout if the UI vanished

The FAQ covers configuration reset. That is faster than a Windows reinstall.

### Check output device before replacing a DAC

Preferences > Playback > Output. A wrong WASAPI device is a player setting, not a dead headset.

## Alternatives

AIMP and MusicBee are other local players. Spotify is a catalog. VLC will play a file but is not a music library.

## Related hardware

A clean output path and enough disk for the library matter more than a GPU name. DSP and high-rate files can still load a CPU.
