# Fork

Application: Fork

Also called git fork, fork git client

Fork, Productivity

A paid Git client known for a clear rebase and interactive rebase UI. The process is Fork.exe. It is not Sourcetree.

## What you need to know

Fork is a paid Git GUI. Sourcetree is Atlassian's free one.

Fork.exe is the git-fork.com client. Sourcetree is SourceTree.exe from Atlassian. GitHub Desktop is GitHub's GUI. The VCS is still git.exe.

- **What is it?**: Paid Git client with a rebase UI

**Same as Sourcetree?**: No. Different vendor and license

**Need git too?**: Yes. Fork calls a Git engine

Feex says

If Fork.exe will not start, I would reinstall from git-fork.com. I would not repair Sourcetree to fix this license. They are different Git windows.

## What is Fork?

Fork is a commercial Git desktop client. People pick it for rebase and diff UX. It is not Sourcetree, not GitHub Desktop, and not git.exe.

## If you have never used it

If someone said try Fork for rebase, this is the paid Git GUI at git-fork.com. Fork.exe is this client. Sourcetree is Atlassian's free GUI. GitHub Desktop is GitHub's GUI. You still need Git. Fork is not a GitHub-only app.

## What is it used for?

**Interactive rebase UI**

The reason many people pay. Sourcetree can rebase too. The window and flow are Fork's.

**Image diffs and file history**

Built-in viewers. Beyond Compare is a different paid diff tool you can also attach.

**Worktrees and Git features in a GUI**

What Fork documents. gh.exe is still the GitHub CLI, not this window.

## Who is it for?

- People willing to pay for a Git GUI
- Users who bounced off Sourcetree's rebase flow
- Anyone who searched Fork and found the meal-delivery app

## Current status

Fork (2018) is a current git gui from Fork. The vendor still points Windows users at https://git-fork.com/.

## How old is it?

Fork launched in 2018 as a newer Git GUI. It is younger than Sourcetree (2013) and GitHub Desktop (2015). Current Windows builds still update from git-fork.com.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Fork for Windows

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Fork |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The GUI is modest. Large histories want more RAM |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Fork.exe | Fork Git client |
| -------- | --------------- |

## Startup components

Fork can reopen the last repo. That is not a Windows service named Fork.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Fork\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------- |

## File formats

GIT

## Common problems

### License nag after evaluation

Expected. A crack is junk. Sourcetree does not use this license dialog.

### Name collision with other products named Fork

This article is the Git client at git-fork.com. Open file location if the exe looks wrong.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from git-fork.com

Dan Pristupov's project hosts the Windows build. A Fork Git crack is junk.

### Confirm Fork.exe under AppData\Local\Fork

SourceTree.exe is Atlassian. GitHubDesktop.exe is GitHub.

### Point Fork at Git for Windows if Git is missing

Preferences pick a Git. That setting does not install Sourcetree's embedded Git.

## Alternatives

Sourcetree if you want a free Atlassian GUI. GitHub Desktop if you are GitHub-first. git.exe if you do not want a GUI.
