# Google Chrome

Application: Google LLC

Also called chrome, google chrome browser

Google LLC, Browsers

Google's web browser. On Windows it shows up as chrome.exe, usually more than once.

## What you need to know

Chrome is a browser. The extra processes are usually tabs.

Google Chrome isolates tabs and utilities into several chrome.exe processes. High RAM often follows open tabs and extensions, not a Windows service with the same name.

- **What is it?**: A web browser

**Many processes?**: Yes. Tabs and helpers

**Heavy on a PC?**: It can be, with many tabs

Feex says

If Chrome is the memory hog, I would close tabs and extensions before I reinstall Windows. The process list is doing what Chromium was designed to do.

## What is Google Chrome?

Google Chrome is a Chromium-based web browser. On Windows the main executable is chrome.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you have never used Chrome, it is a web browser you install yourself. Windows already has Edge. Chrome is the Google account and sync choice. Download it from google.com/chrome. Extra chrome.exe rows in Task Manager are usually tabs and helpers, not a second copy of Windows.

## What is it used for?

**Web browsing**

Open sites, search, and keep signed-in Google tabs.

**Web apps**

Gmail, Docs, and other sites that behave like desktop apps.

**Extensions**

Add-ons from the Chrome Web Store. Each one can add a process and RAM.

## Who is it for?

- People who want the same browser on several devices
- Users who live in Google accounts and web apps
- Anyone who installed Chrome instead of, or beside, Edge

## Current status

Actively developed. Google ships stable, beta, and canary channels. This article describes the stable Windows desktop browser.

## How old is it?

Google launched Chrome in 2008. It is not a new app, and it is not the same product as the 1990s Internet Explorer. Current Chrome is a Chromium browser that still updates on a frequent stable channel.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| CPU | Intel Pentium 4 or later with SSE3, per Google |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 4 GB recommended for current Windows |
| Storage | A few hundred MB for the app, plus profile space |
| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Google |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows the tab. Video and heavy web apps raise it

**RAM demand**: High with many tabs and extensions

**GPU demand**: Used when hardware acceleration is on

**Network demand**: Active while pages and sync run

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| chrome.exe | Browser, tabs, GPU, and utilities |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| chrome_proxy.exe | Crash and launch helper on some installs |

## Startup components

Chrome can keep a background process after you close the last window. That is a Chrome setting, not a Windows service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\\ |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| User profile | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\\ |

## File formats

HTML, PDF, PNG, JPEG

## Common problems

### High memory

Tabs, discarded-tab settings, and extensions are the usual cause. Task Manager inside Chrome shows which tab is expensive.

### Stays after close

Turn off "Continue running background apps" in Chrome settings if you want a full quit.

## Getting unstuck

### Confirm it is Google Chrome

Open file location. Program Files\Google\Chrome is the real app. A chrome.exe in Downloads is not.

### Use Chrome Task Manager first

Shift+Esc inside Chrome names the heavy tab or extension. That is more useful than ending a random chrome.exe in Windows Task Manager.

### Reset or remove an extension before a Windows reinstall

chrome://extensions is the first cleanup. Profile damage is usually not a GPU failure.

## Alternatives

Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and other Chromium browsers overlap. Choose them for sync, features, or policy, not because a list ranked them.

## Related hardware

RAM and a working GPU matter more than a famous CPU name for everyday browsing. A current or previous-generation desktop CPU is usually enough if memory keeps up.
