# itch.io app

Application: itch corp

Also called itch app, itchio, itch.io client

itch corp, Games

The indie store client. The process is itch.exe. The site works without it. It is not Steam.

## What you need to know

itch.exe is optional. The itch.io site already sells the games.

The desktop app is a library helper. Steam is a different store. Most itch purchases remain downloadable in a browser.

- **What is it?**: Optional itch.io desktop library

**Need it?**: No. The site already downloads games

**Same as Steam?**: No. Different store and usually DRM-free zips

Feex says

If the game is on itch.io, I would take the site or the official app. I would not look for it in Steam first, and I would not need EpicGamesLauncher.exe.

## What is itch.io app?

The itch.io app is itch corp’s open-source Windows client. itch.exe installs and updates games you bought on itch.io. The website can do the same job.

## If you have never used it

If you buy weird indie games on itch.io, the desktop app is optional. Download it from itch.io/app if you want a library window. Browse and download from itch.io in a browser if you do not. It is not Steam. There is no Valve overlay tax and no Epic weekly claim. Developers set their own prices and DRM-free zips.

## What is it used for?

**Optional library window**

Install itch titles without hunting zip folders. Steam is a different account. You do not need this app to use the site.

**Pay-what-you-want and DRM-free zips**

Developers choose the deal. Epic’s launcher is a curated store with a different checkout.

**Dev builds and jams**

Game jam pages and in-progress builds live on itch.io first. The app only mirrors what the site already sold you.

## Who is it for?

- People who already have an itch.io collection
- Developers shipping jam builds
- Anyone who should not treat itch.exe as Steam

## Current status

itch.io app (2015) is a current indie store client from itch corp. The vendor still points Windows users at https://itch.io/app.

## How old is it?

itch.io the site predates the 2015 desktop app. The client is a convenience wrapper around a website store. It is newer than Steam and smaller on purpose. A 2012 “itch is only a browser” memory is still half true.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per itch’s app docs |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The client is light. Games set the real bar |

## Resource profile

- **Disk demand**: Follows the indie titles you install

  **Network demand**: Updates and browse

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| itch.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

itch can start with Windows from its settings. Turn that off if you only open it after a jam.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\itch\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------- |

## File formats

itch manifests, developer zips

## Common problems

### App missing a purchase the site shows

Refresh or sign in with the same itch account. The site is the source of truth.

### People hunt a Steam key

Many itch games never appear on Steam. That is the developer’s store choice.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from itch.io/app

The project documents the Windows build. A random itch.exe is the wrong file.

### Download from your itch library in a browser if the app stalls

That fallback is expected. Steam does not work that way for a typical Valve title.

### Check the developer’s itch page for the real folder

Some titles are just a zip. The app only unpacks what the page shipped.

## Alternatives

The itch.io website without the app. Steam or GOG if the developer also sold it there. Playnite if you want one list.
