# KakaoTalk

Application: Kakao

Also called kakaotalk desktop, kakao talk

Kakao, Productivity

Korea's default phone messenger with a Windows client. The process is KakaoTalk.exe.

## What you need to know

KakaoTalk is Korea's default phone messenger. It is not LINE.

KakaoTalk.exe is the Windows client. LINE is a different vendor. WeChat is Tencent. QR or phone pairing still starts on the mobile app.

- **What is it?**: Chat

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If KakaoTalk.exe is in the tray, I would quit KakaoTalk, not LINE. This is Kakao, not LY Corporation.

## What is KakaoTalk?

KakaoTalk for Windows is a linked desktop client for Kakao accounts. Plus friends, KakaoTalk Channel, and Korean 10-digit numbers are the usual login story. LINE Keep is not here.

## If you have never used it

KakaoTalk is the default chat app in South Korea. The PC build installs under Program Files\Kakao\KakaoTalk and shows KakaoTalk.exe. You pair it by scanning a code in the phone app Kakao already signed in. A Japan-facing "add me on LINE" request is a different vendor and a different folder.

## What is it used for?

**Phone-number chats used across Korea**

Threads follow the KakaoTalk account. LINE is the Japan and Taiwan default instead.

**KakaoTalk calls**

Voice and video in the desktop window. They are not LINE calls.

**Desktop notifications**

The Windows app keeps Kakao pings on the PC. The phone app remains the authenticator.

## Who is it for?

- People whose Korean contacts only watch KakaoTalk Channel notices
- Offices that use KakaoTalk group chats instead of Slack
- Anyone who scanned a yellow speech-bubble QR, not a LINE QR

## Current status

Actively developed by Kakao. The Windows client still expects a live phone pairing.

## How old is it?

Kakao launched KakaoTalk in 2010. It beat older Korean SMS culture the way LINE later did in Japan, but the companies never merged. Kakao also runs KakaoPay and Daum. Those brands do not appear in a LINE install.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Current Windows build

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| KakaoTalk.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ------------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

KakaoTalk can reopen at logon from its own option. That does not launch LINE.exe from AppData.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files (x86)\Kakao\KakaoTalk\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------- |

## File formats

JPG, MP4

## Common problems

### Desktop waits on the phone

KakaoTalk PC is a linked device. That is expected.

### People close LINE to stop Kakao stickers

Wrong network. KakaoTalk.exe is this product.

## Getting unstuck

### Use Kakao's official KakaoTalk page, not a mill

A KakaoTalk English crack is junk. cs.kakao.com/helps is vendor help.

### Pair with the phone KakaoTalk scanner

LINE help will not name KakaoTalk rooms.

### Quit KakaoTalk.exe from the tray

Closing the window can leave the desktop client resident.

## Alternatives

LINE is the Japan and Taiwan default. WhatsApp is the usual US fallback. Neither one opens a KakaoTalk Channel.
