# Kodi

Application: Kodi Foundation

Also called xbmc, xbox media center, kodi media center

Kodi Foundation, System

A home theater UI that started as Xbox Media Center. The process is kodi.exe. It is not a Plex-style hosted server.

## What you need to know

Kodi is the living-room UI. Plex is the account-backed server plus apps.

kodi.exe runs on the PC in front of the TV. It scrapes folders and shares. It does not replace Plex Media Server or Jellyfin’s dashboard, and it does not require a Plex login.

- **What is it?**: A home theater UI that started as XBMC

**Is it Plex?**: No. Kodi is the living-room app, not a hosted server

**Need an account?**: No Plex account. Add a folder

Feex says

If the sofa PC should look like a TV menu over a local disk, I would open Kodi. I would not tell you to make a Plex account for that job, and I would not call kodi.exe a Jellyfin server.

## What is Kodi?

Kodi is a media center front end. kodi.exe scrapes local and network libraries and draws a TV-friendly UI. It is not Plex Media Server.

## If you have never used it

If you want a living-room remote UI over folders on this PC or a share, this is Kodi. Download it from kodi.tv/download. Point it at your movie folder. It is not Plex. Plex is a server plus phone apps behind an account. Kodi is the ten-foot interface that started as Xbox Media Center. Add-ons exist. Official builds do not require a Plex login.

## What is it used for?

**Ten-foot library UI**

Browse movies and shows with a remote. Plex’s job is a server plus clients. Kodi’s job is this living-room window.

**Local and network shares**

Add a folder or an SMB share. You do not create a plex.tv account to see the files on this PC.

**Official add-on repo**

Kodi documents its repository. Third-party repos vary. This article does not walk through unofficial builds.

## Who is it for?

- People building an HTPC or a living-room PC
- Users who still say XBMC
- Anyone who should not treat kodi.exe as a Plex replacement server

## Current status

Kodi (2002) is a current home theater player from Kodi Foundation. The vendor still points Windows users at https://kodi.tv/download.

## How old is it?

Xbox Media Center appeared in 2002 on the original Xbox. The project renamed to Kodi in 2014. It is older than Plex’s commercial server and much older than Jellyfin. A 2004 XBMC-on-Xbox guide is ancestry, not the current Windows kodi.exe.

## Versions

Omega and other named releases

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per Kodi’s Windows download |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | 2 GB class is the old HTPC story. Current 4K libraries want more RAM, per Kodi’s notes |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Software decode and scraping

**GPU demand**: UI and hardware decode

**Disk demand**: Thumbnails and the files you added

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| kodi.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Kodi can start with Windows if you built a kiosk shortcut. That is your shortcut, not a Plex service.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Kodi\\ |
| --------------- | ----------------------- |

## File formats

MKV, MP4, MP3, other files Kodi’s wiki lists

## Common problems

### Empty library after install

Add a source. Kodi does not ship a catalog and does not sign you into plex.tv.

### Random add-on repo

Stick to what kodi.wiki documents. Unofficial repos are a support dead end and a malware magnet.

## Getting unstuck

### Install only from kodi.tv/download

Search ads still wrap Kodi in “fully loaded” builds. The Foundation’s installer is the real one.

### Add the source, then scrape

Files have to live on disk or a share first. A missing movie is often a path, not a codec pack.

### Reset the skin if the UI vanished

Settings > Interface > Skin. A broken skin is not a dead GPU.

## Alternatives

Plex or Jellyfin if you need phone apps talking to a server. VLC if you only want to open one file. LaunchBox or Big Box if the living-room UI is games, not movies.

## Related hardware

A quiet HTPC with HDMI to the TV matters more than a gaming GPU name. Hardware decode still helps 4K.
