# LM Studio

Application: LM Studio

Also called lmstudio, lm studio app

LM Studio, Productivity

A GUI for downloading and running local GGUF models. The process is LM Studio.exe. It is not Ollama.

## What you need to know

LM Studio is a GGUF GUI. Ollama is a different runner.

LM Studio.exe is a desktop UI for local GGUF models. ollama.exe is another local runner. They do not share the same model folder. ChatGPT desktop is a cloud app.

- **What is it?**: GUI for local GGUF models

**Same as Ollama?**: No. Different runner and folders

**Cloud ChatGPT?**: No. Weights stay on this PC

Feex says

If LM Studio.exe ate the RAM, I would unload the model in this app. I would not quit ollama.exe to close this window unless you also started Ollama. Two runners can both hold weights.

## What is LM Studio?

LM Studio is a desktop GUI for local GGUF models. It is not Ollama, not ChatGPT desktop, and not Hugging Face the website.

## If you have never used it

If you want a window to browse and run GGUF models, LM Studio is that GUI. Download it from lmstudio.ai. LM Studio.exe is this product. ollama.exe is a different runner with a CLI-first story. ChatGPT.exe is still a cloud client.

## What is it used for?

**Download GGUF models in a UI**

The catalog inside LM Studio. ollama pull uses a different library and folder.

**Chat against a loaded model**

A desktop chat window. ChatGPT.exe still calls OpenAI.

**Local server**

An OpenAI-compatible local port LM Studio documents. That is not ollama serve by name.

## Who is it for?

- People who want a GUI instead of ollama CLI
- Users hunting GGUF files with a window
- Anyone who installed Ollama and wondered where the chat UI went

## Current status

LM Studio (2023) is a current local model gui from LM Studio. The vendor still points Windows users at https://lmstudio.ai/.

## How old is it?

LM Studio launched in 2023 alongside the local-model wave. It is the same generation as Ollama. Current Windows builds still update. A 2022 llama.cpp CLI-only setup is a different UX.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per LM Studio |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | The GUI is modest. The GGUF you load can want several to tens of GB |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| LM Studio.exe | LM Studio window |
| ------------- | ---------------- |

## Startup components

LM Studio can stay in the tray if you left the local server on. That is not Ollama's tray.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\LM Studio\\ |
| --------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

## Common problems

### Two local runners loaded at once

Ollama and LM Studio can both hold a model in RAM. That is two products, not a Windows memory leak by name.

### Disk shock after a download

GGUF files are large. Ollama's blobs are a different cache.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from lmstudio.ai

LM Studio hosts the Windows build. A Studio AI pack on a freeware site is junk.

### Confirm LM Studio.exe, not ollama.exe

Each has its own model directory. Deleting one cache will not clear the other.

### Lower GPU offload or pick a smaller GGUF if the app crashes

That setting is inside LM Studio. ChatGPT.exe has no GGUF slider.

## Alternatives

Ollama if you want a CLI and a simple service. ChatGPT or Claude if you want a cloud model. llama.cpp by itself is lower level.
