# Loom

Application: Atlassian

Also called loom recorder, atlassian loom

Atlassian, Productivity

An async video-message recorder, now part of Atlassian. On Windows the process is Loom.exe.

## What you need to know

Loom is async video. It is not Zoom.

Loom.exe records a message and gives you a link. Zoom.exe is a live meeting client. Atlassian owns Loom now.

- **What is it?**: Async video

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If Loom.exe is recording, I would treat it as an async clip, not a Zoom meeting. Quitting Zoom.exe does not stop this recorder.

## What is Loom?

Loom is an asynchronous screen and camera recorder. The Windows executable is Loom.exe. A live Zoom call is a different product.

## If you have never used it

If work said drop a Loom, this is an async video recorder, not Zoom. You record a short video and send a link. Download the Windows app from loom.com/download. The process is Loom.exe. Atlassian acquired Loom. Zoom.exe is a live meeting client.

## What is it used for?

**Record a video message**

Camera plus screen, then a share link. That is async. Zoom is a live meeting.

**Library on loom.com**

Clips live in the Loom account. They are not a local Zoom MP4 unless you export.

**Atlassian-adjacent sharing**

Some teams paste Loom links in Jira or Confluence. That is still Loom, not Zoom.

## Who is it for?

- People whose team replaced status meetings with Loom links
- Users who already have a Loom account
- Anyone who installed Zoom when they were asked for Loom

## Current status

Loom (2016) is a current async video from Atlassian. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.loom.com/download.

## How old is it?

Loom launched in 2016 as async video messages. Atlassian acquired it in 2023. It is newer than Zoom as a meeting brand story and not a 1995 Webex replacement. Current Loom is still the recorder plus a site.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| Loom.exe | Main Windows executable |
| -------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

Loom can sit in the tray for a quick record. Turn that off if you only record once a month.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Users\\\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Loom\\ |
| --------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |

## File formats

MP4, Loom share links

## Common problems

### Camera stays on after a take

Stop or quit Loom. A leftover preview is the recorder, not a virus.

### People join a Zoom waiting room for a Loom link

A loom.com URL is a video page, not a live meeting grid.

## Getting unstuck

### Install from loom.com/download

A Loom pro recorder from a mill is junk.

### Use support.loom.com for upload and camera issues

Zoom Support will not name the Loom library.

### Confirm Loom.exe, not Zoom.exe

Open file location. An Atlassian or Loom folder is this product.

## Alternatives

Zoom if you need a live call. Meet if the calendar says Google Meet. A local Game Bar clip is not a Loom share link.
