# Malwarebytes

Application: Malwarebytes

Also called malwarebytes antivirus, mbam, malwarebytes premium

Malwarebytes, Security

An on-demand malware scanner with a paid realtime layer. The service is MBAMService.exe. It is not Windows Security and not AdwCleaner.

## What you need to know

Malwarebytes is a second-opinion scanner. Premium realtime is a different mode.

The free app scans when you ask. Premium keeps MBAMService.exe resident and should take the antivirus slot from Windows Security. Running that realtime layer next to a still-live Defender engine is the usual conflict. AdwCleaner is a separate cleaner.

- **What is it?**: On-demand scanner. Premium adds realtime

**Instead of Defender?**: Free can sit beside it. Premium should take the slot

**Same as AdwCleaner?**: No. Different Malwarebytes tool

Feex says

If you installed Malwarebytes Premium and Defender is still scanning every file, I would open Windows Security and pick one owner. Two live engines are a fight. The free scanner can sit beside Defender. Premium should not.

## What is Malwarebytes?

Malwarebytes is a consumer scanner. Free mode is on-demand. Premium registers as a realtime antivirus. The Windows service is MBAMService.exe.

## If you have never used it

If you already have Windows Security and still want a second opinion scan, Malwarebytes is the product people add. Download it from malwarebytes.com/mwb-download. The free build is an on-demand scanner. Premium turns on realtime and MBAMService.exe stays resident. That paid layer plus a still-live Defender engine is the two-antivirus fight. AdwCleaner is a different Malwarebytes cleaner you run and close.

## What is it used for?

**On-demand second opinion**

Scan after a scare while Windows Security stays the resident engine. That is the free job.

**Paid realtime**

Premium keeps MBAMService.exe watching files. Windows Security should then show Malwarebytes as the owner, not two live engines.

**Web and exploit layers in Premium**

Browser and exploit shields are Premium modules. They are not AdwCleaner and not MsMpEng.exe.

## Who is it for?

- People who want a second scan beside Defender, not a replacement yet
- Users who paid for Premium and now see MBAMService.exe at idle
- Anyone who mixed this installer with AdwCleaner and thought they were the same app

## Current status

Actively developed as Malwarebytes Desktop Security. This article is the consumer Windows app, not ThreatDown endpoint.

## How old is it?

Malwarebytes grew from a 2000s on-demand cleaner into a Premium suite. Current Desktop Security is the Windows 10 and 11 app. It is not Microsoft Defender from 2006, and it is not the old MBAM 1.x portable you copied from a USB.

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, per Malwarebytes Desktop Security |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Malwarebytes help lists at least 4 GB, preferably 8 GB |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Spikes during a scan. Premium adds idle cost

**Disk demand**: Full scans walk the drive

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| MBAMService.exe | Malwarebytes service and protection engine |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Malwarebytes.exe | Desktop window |

## Startup components

Premium starts MBAMService.exe with Windows. The free scanner should not need a persistent service after you close the window.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\\ |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------- |

## Common problems

### Premium plus live Defender

Two realtime engines can lock the same file. Windows Security should name Malwarebytes after Premium registers. If MsMpEng.exe is still the owner, the slot never switched.

### People treat AdwCleaner as the full suite

AdwCleaner is a PUP cleaner you run and close. It does not replace MBAMService.exe.

## Getting unstuck

### See who owns Virus and threat protection

Start > Windows Security. If you paid for Premium, Malwarebytes should be listed. If Defender is still active, the two engines can fight.

### Confirm Program Files\Malwarebytes

MBAMService.exe belongs under Malwarebytes. A similarly named exe in Downloads is not the vendor build.

### Use AdwCleaner only for a one-shot PUP pass

That tool is not a resident antivirus. Install the full Malwarebytes app if you wanted ongoing scans.

## Alternatives

Windows Security is already on the PC. HitmanPro is another on-demand second opinion. Two paid realtime suites at once is the mistake.
