# MATLAB

Application: MathWorks

Also called mathworks matlab, matlab ide

MathWorks, Productivity

Paid numeric computing environment. License files matter. The process is MATLAB.exe. It is not Octave.

## What you need to know

MATLAB is paid MathWorks software. License files matter. It is not Octave.

MATLAB.exe needs a MathWorks license. Octave can run some .m files but is a different program. Toolboxes do not transfer.

- **What is it?**: Numeric computing

**Still current?**: Yes, see Current status

**Official download?**: Use the vendor link in this article

Feex says

If MATLAB.exe will not start, I check the MathWorks license and activation, not Octave. Octave is the free cousin, not this product.

## What is MATLAB?

MATLAB is MathWorks' numeric environment. Toolboxes are licensed add-ons. Octave runs some .m files without a MathWorks license. It is not MATLAB.exe.

## If you have never used it

If a class or job said "install MATLAB", you need a MathWorks account and a license (campus license, trial, or paid). Download from mathworks.com. GNU Octave is a free language cousin, not this IDE, and it will not use your MathWorks license file.

## What is it used for?

**Matrices, plots, and .m scripts**

The MATLAB desktop. Octave is a different binary if you do not have a license.

**Licensed toolboxes**

Simulink and others. License files and activation matter. Octave does not substitute those toolboxes.

**Campus or org activation**

You activate against MathWorks. A missing license.lic is not an Octave install problem.

## Who is it for?

- Students on a campus license
- Engineers whose job ships MATLAB code
- People who almost installed only Octave for a MATLAB-only toolbox

## Current status

MATLAB (1984) is a current numeric computing from MathWorks. The vendor still points Windows users at https://www.mathworks.com/downloads/.

## How old is it?

MATLAB dates to 1984. Current releases are named by year and letter (R2024b, and so on). Octave grew later as a free interpreter. A 1990s student edition floppy is history.

## Versions

Major channels first. Exact build numbers are not all verified here.

Current R-year release

Campus-supported older R-year

## System requirements

Values follow the publisher's public guidance. Workload still changes the real need.

### Minimum

| Operating system | A current supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 release, per the vendor |
| ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| RAM | Enough for Windows plus this app. Heavy projects want more. |

## Resource profile

- **CPU demand**: Follows what you open inside the app

**RAM demand**: Follows documents, tabs, or libraries

## Installed processes

These executables belong to this product when it is installed.

| MATLAB.exe | Main Windows executable |
| ---------- | ----------------------- |

## Startup components

MATLAB does not need to start with Windows. License managers on campus may be separate services.

## File locations

| Typical install | C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R20\*\\ |
| --------------- | ------------------------------- |

## File formats

M, MAT, FIG, MLX

## Common problems

### Installed Octave and expected Simulink

Octave is not MATLAB. Toolboxes stay on a MathWorks license.

### License expired or offline activation failed

MathWorks account and the license file, not a missing Visual C++ pack, are the first check.

## Getting unstuck

### Download from mathworks.com/downloads while signed in

Campus users follow their school's license portal. Skip "MATLAB full ISO" forums.

### Run the MathWorks activation client if MATLAB.exe exits immediately

help.mathworks.com covers license.dat and online activation.

### Install only the toolboxes your license includes

The installer lists them. Octave packages are not those toolboxes.

## Alternatives

GNU Octave is the common free interpreter for some .m files. Python plus NumPy is another numeric stack. R plus RStudio is statistics-first.

## Related hardware

MathWorks publishes release system requirements. Big matrices want RAM. GPU computing needs a supported NVIDIA GPU and MathWorks' Parallel toolbox, not Feex sensors.
